One of My Favorite Places

Post by f-BOB » Thu May 05, 2005 2:54 pm

O.W. is one of my favorite places to ride. It's got a little of everything. Sand, dirt, technical hill climbs, rocks, plenty of rocks! canyons, moon surface mud hills, unique geo features (pumpkin patch, mud pots), wide open space for camping, and best of all...No FEEEEEEEEEEES!

To all who might explore and enjoy this area, please pack out what you brought in, don't burn wood with nails, screws, etc. Use common sense, and have a ball. :D

One thing to keep in mind, although the store has many parts, oil, tires, plugs, etc. if you think you might need it, bring it with you, unless you don't mind paying 2-3 times as much as you do at home (even more than at G as well). No real fresh water available in the area either, unless you camp at the RV park. There are pay showers in the established camping areas though.

One of my favorites too. Here is a picture taken from the top of devils slide looking toward blow sand hill. Ocotillo has some of the best sunsets around.

This is one of the quietest Forums????

That may be a good thing, we don't want too many people out there.

And the view from Devil's slide is a great one...in any direction.
I've even heard some Jeeps are able to make it up there.

I'll be out there this weekend enjoying the area.

Just came back......had a good group out there.
Not too many out there probably cause of the higher temps which were around 95 during the day. The season is coming to an end

well, im new to this forum. i too, love ocotillo wells. one of my favorite places. its where i spend the busy weekends, thanksgiving, new years, presidents, easter, etc. not near as crowded as glamis on busy weekends. i reserve the dunes for off weekends. my girls are still too small, and i just dont want them exposed to all the crap that happens on holidays in the big dunes. group i go with, we always camp just north of devil slide lane. in fact, from your picture, if you were to look right, you would be able to see my camp just fine from the hill top there.
borrego holds a close 2nd place in my mind as well. spent many a weekends there camping out with good friends, and good times, previous to being married and waaay previous to having kids.

I am from AZ and have been to Octillo twice with my brother who is from Murrietta. It's pretty cool out there but it pains me to drive past the dunes to go ride in the desert. I can do that around Phoenix. That is probably why Octillo is not as crowded. If it wasn't for my brother I would never go there again. Not that it isn't a good place to ride, but why drive farther than the dunes to ride?

Just an opinion from a Zonie!

I drive past Ocotillo every time I go to Glamis. And when I do, I secretly get that feeling like when you get off of the highest ski-lift on the very top of the mountain. "Yeah, I'm a big dawg!"
I've never ridden at Ocotillo, nor do I know anybody [other than some in this forum] who have.
I would love to be able to hop on my quad 1 1/2 hours sooner that I am able to at Glamis, and get home 1 1/2 hours earlier from my trip [well actually I'd get home at the same time, cause I would credit myself more riding time on load-up day :P ].
But spoken like a true outsider, looking in, it seems like a bunch of desert... and I can drive a little longer for ton-o-dunes!

Nonetheless, you guys talk pretty highly of it, and I'm sure we'll be at Ocotillo some day.
More and more, the crowds at Glamis are bothering me. So, we'll venture out for a new place of norm. And then, Glamis will be a place where nobody goes anymore because its too crowded.

OK Yogi! (nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded!)

Actually, Thanksgiving at OW can be pretty busy, but like most places, the farther you get from camp, the fewer people you see. And it's not as busy as the dunes.

See ya all at the Iron Door!

We're going Thanksgiving for sure. Not sure where we're camping yet. A friend of mine is staying up north off S-22, but I don't want to be THAT far away from all the action. Thinking about Pole Line road, but again, kinda far from the Iron Door, etc.

Anyone else? Where do you camp at OW?

pole line road is a cool spot. just far from the door is right! we go in off of split mtn road, and follow airport around, proceed north to devil slide lane, we camp east side of devil slide lane, between morton road, and san felipe wash. not too busy there, even on thanksgiving weekend. still close enough to door, blowsand hill, etc.

We camp by the airport, close to the road and Iron Door. I would like to get away from road and try something a little more remote / QUIET as in NO BOOM BOXES...does that place exist?

Well...
If you keep on 78 a little further east, you'll come to Wolf Well Road. It's in pretty good shape most of the time and there are lots of areas to camp either off Wolf Well, or the other roads that come off it. You'll see plenty of people right along the road, especially at Holmes camp (one of the "official" camping areas) but there are a lot of good places to camp out there. THe road gets pretty soft about 3 miles in (especially where it crosses the wash), but you should be able to find a place that suits you before you go that far. If you don't have one, pick up a map at the ranger station next time out, and see for yourself.

I think we're set on Pole Line Road for sure for Thanksgiving. Iron Door run is going to be an all day ride from there, but we can always take the truck down the hi-way!
