California recently amended the state Vehicle Code in response to other states no longer honoring California OHV Identification. Beginning January 1, 2022, residents of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Texas, Utah and Wyoming will be required to purchase a California OHV Non-Resident Permit when visiting.
AB232 specifically amended CA Vehicle Code Section 38010 (b)(10) to exempt from CA OHV identification: “ A motor vehicle with a currently valid identification or registration permit issued by another state, if the other state recognizes an identification plate or device issued by the department pursuant to subdivision (a) as valid for use in that state.” This will have a major impact on the Imperial Sand Dunes, given the large number of Arizona residents that visit each year.
California amended their Vehicle Code primarily in response to Arizona requiring ALL out of state visitors to purchase an OHV permit. However, the California Vehicle Code is flexible enough to allow reciprocity with any state that amends their law to honor valid California OHV Identification (Green or Red Sticker).
