Classic VW Sandrail Build Pictures

Post by Booga-dune-poon »

If you decide to go the VW route, then these may be of interest.

I purchased a 1970 VW Beetle for $500. Removed the body and sold it for $250.

The belly pan with IRS rear suspension, transaxle and engine are the major pieces I'll start with.

Stripped down ready to cut the rear torsion / IRS assembly off

I used a cut off wheel, hack saw and chisle to remove the IRS

The rest of the Sandrail will be built around this

To minimize distorsion, I welded in a pattern like when you torque the lug nuts on your wheels.
Image

Half the battle to make a good weld requires body position that allows you to see. Sometime this requires a little contortion.

Primer coat of paint. The jury is still out on any further frame modifications, so no powder coat until the verdict comes in.

Traded the old VIN from the VW for a new VIN for the buggie at your friendly neighborhood CHP office.

So what went wrong? The cooling fan failed due to metal fatigue. Pulled off the fan belt and limped back to camp. Drove down from Winchester Bay to Coos Bay and picked up a new one from the nice guys at Bug Germinators.

I bought the VW Beetle in July 2007 and finished the sandrail just days before we left to Oregon in June of 2008. Remember the almost $5 a gallon at the time. My wife asked me if I thought now was a good time to go on this trip? I said it's a perfect time to go. The Discovery Point campground was awesome for OHV enthusiasts. Full hook ups, general store, laundry, parts store, hot food and single wide mobile homes for rent. All just 5 minutes from the dunes. Just drive the sandrail out the gate and follow a very wide shoulder next to the road and you're at the sand. Yes it was a perfect time to go.

I've also taken the buggie to Dumont Dunes, Glamis, Gordens Well and Ocotillo Wells. The original 1500 cc single port engine was changed out last season for a 1914 cc with dual Webers and had the transaxel upgraded to a Pro Sand configuration. Future plans are to go coil over shocks in the front and extend the trailing arms.
