Sad Day at Dumont today: Rangers/Rescue no transportation:

Post by Dune Bandits » Sun Mar 09, 2008 11:17 pm

Took hours for rescue personel to reach a dune buggie accident at Dumont today.
As the video shows, BLM rangers & Fire Rescue had no duneworthy transportation to reach the victims and had to rely on passing duners to hitchhike a ride to the scene and to transport the victim to the med evac coptor.
Where are our entrance fees going?

The Barstow BLM boss needs to be replaced or step down,, and we should all write the local congressman.

[Moved from WOS]

That's too bad. I thought BLM had a rescue buggy there? For sure they have SUVs or trucks. The truck in the video looks like a County Fire truck.

The fire truck wasnt dune worthy. It parked at the top of the entrance rd and duners gave them rides to the scene over a mile across the dunes in their rhinos.

Yeah, I figured that.

The ISDRA rangers (including the visitor services staff) that drive vehicles are trained to be able to drive an SUV/light truck in the dunes. I figured that would (could) be the case at Dumont. While not the best dune vehicle, an SUV/light truck is better than nothing.

What happened and how are the injured duners? I saw the helicopter in the video. That's almost never a good sign.

From a rank amateurs (that's myself) observation it appeared that they entered a technical steep small bowl, perhaps airborn, and center-punched the opposite side on landing.

I may be totally wrong, but the buggie didnt have the usual damage and sand coverage from a rollover, but may have.

I feel it's is important for people to know the cause, to help them from making the same mistake.
1 female passenger was eventually removed and transported to the Life Flite.

My family will be prepaired on the dunes if an accident happens to us, to be self-sufficent in getting our injured to help.

My only point is the rangers should at least have a dune worthy vech, and not rely on the camp hosts two-man Rhino and the luck of a passing duner being able to lend assistance too.
A ranger that asked not to be identified strongly agreed.

Thanks for posting the info Dune Bandits.

The members of the Dumont Dunes TRT would be a good place to start campaigning about the importance of a dune worthy vehicle. The link above is to a post from March 2006. Some of the members may have changed.

The last posted DD TRT meeting date was 11/17/07.

or contact Mike Ahrens, Barstow OHV coordinator, at (760) 252-6047.
