djw she probably wouldn't want to upgrade to general at this point. She starts school tomorrow anyway so any time for studying should be school related. Currently the only HF equipment I have is a 10m mobile radio. I'm going to save up for a rig but those things are pricey. I think I will have to hide a dipole up on the roof as well since the HOA's don't care for towers. I definitely hope to hear you guys on the air soon.djw wrote:Dang, have her go for the general.I'll have another name to add to the list in a couple of days!!!![]()
Good luck to the both of you, looking forward to chattin' on the airwaves.

Add me, KJ6GCY,Jim Kastle
Passed test last week after a couple of hours of taking practice tests online.
Technician test was extremely easy. 35 Multiple choice questions and you can miss 9 and still pass. Typical question, "What is the voltage of a typical automotive battery?" Practice tests are widely available. $15.00 to take test, and they are offered all over the place. If you're interested enough to read this far into this thread, you can pass the test!

Re: ASA list with licenses
Just got back into playing around on the radio and plan to bring my 2m HT out with me this coming weekend.
Gonna see what machines I can hit from the dunes. I'll be bringing out my old AEA telescoping antenna. I plan to mount a 2m mobile - most likely a Yaesu ft2900 in the rail over the summer. A few friends are going car to car out there... 75 watts should get me across the dunes even if I'm in a bowl.

(Already on the ASA ham list)

Re: ASA list with licenses
Should have no problems hitting the repeaters on Black Mountain even without the old AEA.
Dwayne and I were able to communicate at 5watts from Gecko to Gordon's a few years back - but I did have to use my magmount antenna on the truck to do so reliably.
I've been able to hit the black mt. repeaters reliably from just about anywhere in the south dunes with 5 watts and a decent antenna. And from high points with a rubber duck.
Honestly 75watts is not needed in the dunes if your radio is even close to being set up properly. Even 25watts is overkill with a decent antenna. 10-15watts and a good antenna will get you point to point just about anywhere imaginable in the dunes.

I'm in now as well: Paul Kastle, KJ6GJI
I passed the technician and general the same day. The Technician one was very basic, and gives you access to a lot. The General was more difficult, but with the question pool available from http://www.arrl.org and practice tests at http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl it wasn't bad. Again, $15 and a little studying was well worth it. I can't believe I waited this long to do it.

Re: ASA list with licenses
I bought a 10 meter radio 15 years ago and have just been putting the testing off for years. Now sounds like a good time to "geter done". I have used the radio in the 27mgz band
from time to time when I bring it to the dunes.

"enjoy your ride"

Re: ASA list with licenses
Congrats on the upgrade! Going to start playing with some HF now I hope
"Talking" (PSK-31) to Alaska on 5w while sitting on the Mexican border in the dunes was a blast. Heard some European calls as well but apparently they couldn't hear me
Really need to get my Manx rolling again so I can do more of that. Been wanting to pick up one of these: http://www.nue-psk.com/ so I can leave the notebook at home and really have a lightweight HF station for backpacking/camping.
