I was curious what your tabs were for a typical weekend in terms of $$$ spent. Im talking, fuel for toys, trucks, moho's, food, beverages, extras (vendors)? Im consisitently spending $200-400 minimum per weekend and I dont even own a moho or furnished hauler.

Oh, cool thread!
A 3 day trip to the dunes for my family is just $75.00.
A 5 day trip is $100.00.
A 7 day trip is $150.00.
This is mainly for propane, beer and groceries.
I love running numbers on stuff like this....
....there are other costs that should also be calc'd into the formula:
Keeping in mind that I have a chincy rig [i.e. 20' FunRunner Trailer and a '06 Chevy 3/4 ton Pick Up], my annual expenses break down like this.
[I am not including any costs for my truck as this is my primary vehicle and wear / tear happens more with my commute than it does when dragging the trailer]
The total annual cost is about $3,712.00, divided by 30 camping days per year =$123.00 per day.
A 3 day trip for my family is $369.00.
A 5 day trip is $615.00.
A 7 day trip is $861.00.
This includes Finance payment, Trailer Registration, insurance, storage, maintenance, propane, Season Pass fee's / permits, groceries and beer.
I am interested to know what your costs are, for less chincy rigs. We don’t always want to have a family of 3 [and occasionally my father too] in a 20’ FunRunner. We were planning to get a bigger trailer this summer, but the interest rates have made us reconsider.

29' MH pulling enclosed, 2 full size quads, 1 kids quad, 1 golf cart. Keeping all the toys gassed, making the 375 mile round trip, food, etc. runs me about $400 for a 4 dayer. I don't think the length of my stay changes my cost dramatically, it's the MH going there and back that rips my wallet.

Scary to think about...Hope wife doesn't read these.
I'm guessing between $150.00 ( gas / food / misc ) when its just me to maybe $200.00 + if wife and daughter go for 3 day weekend.
Amount of Aggravation for all the crap they bring for 3 days......Priceless !

Four day trip costs for my family:
Oh to heck with it, I got depressed when I started adding it all up!
Like most folks (it's only a matter of time until the Yuma guys get in here and rub it in) fuel is my major outlay. Can't do much about that other than move closer and that isn't happening.
So, when all is said and done, my cost comes out to a little more than $100 per day for a four day weekend. Shorter stays are slightly lower, but that's a good figure I think for budget purposes.
Can't say it costs too much, because where else can you take a family of 4 on a vacation where they have the time of their lives for $100 a day?
If I could just find a way to make the wife and kids pay their own way

I never actually added it up. Never wanted to.
It's like when we first got a moho. People would ask what mileage ya' get? How much does it cost to fill it up? I'd answer, "I dunno'. It goes until it gets low, then I fill it up and it goes again."
I'll guess it's in the 350 - 450 range for 3 to 5 days, 4 to 6 people, gas being probably 80% of it. 30' Class C, 16' enclosed trailer, 2 seat beater, & a CR250.

Gas: round trip towing + Jeep $200
Food & Beverage: depends wich friends I camp with... $40 to $90
Annual Pass: I'm trying to get my per trip cost down on that thing, need to make a few more trips.
I'm with you Wolfpack on the MPG issue, I dont want to know. Do you get the same confused looks when they realize youre not interested in knowing it...

I shoot for $200 Most of it for gas. But I've hit a bad streak lately on gas comming home. I get down there just fine but I dump a 1/4 tank betwwen the store and Osbourne whn I'm towing something. My 89 F250 has a 460 and that just EATS gas. My Dodge does GREAT except when it's towing something or in a strong head wind. Seems I gotta spend another $100 on gas just to get home in both vehicles. So I lo ball the wife with what I know it'll cost to get out there and call her on the cell on the way home. And get the "well do what you need to do to get home" Then for months after I gott hear "If it wasn't for your Glamis trip."
So safely for my Ody, and rail in a 16 ft enclosed I would say $300. OH dang it all I just remembered 2 stroke oil. ***** $350](./images/smilies/eusa_wall.gif)
No wonder I keep using the excuse my toys aren't put together. The truth is I CAN NOT AFFORD TO GO.

Typical 3 day trip costs are as outlined;
Diesel 1 Tank $100.00
Fuel Cells $ 80.00
Food& Drink $100.00
Vendors $ 60.00
Say about $350.00
Doesn't include what I pay for a cord of wood to use at home and at ISDRA and the yearly fee permit, etc., etc.

34' moho with 24' enclosed with a wife and 2 boys ...seeing ~6 mpg from Murrieta and back
I also take 5 5-gallon cans of fuel for the toys.
As someone else said, fuel is the majority of it.. and there isn't much difference between a 3 day trip and a 8 day trip really... maybe $150 and that includes the pumper coming out for the tanks.
Would hazard a guess that most trips run $350 to $500 ...so ~$400 for the average.

Easy $300 to $500 for a 4 day trip Thats for just Diesel,Gas,Ice,beer, soda,on the road snacks, and of course I always got to get a t-shirt or 2. I do not figure in the cost of food because My family is going to eat whether we are at the dunes or at home.

Like any good duner.....It isn't the cost involved that matters! It's the sand!Gottaride wrote:Trip to the Dunes = PRICELESS
Now if I were to really get into this and calculate the Motorhome and enclosed trailer costs including upkeep, the Jeep plus four quads, four motorcycles, fuel, parts, gear, tires....and on...and on....and on!

The good news?? This is the same for a 3 day trip as is it for a 4 or 5 day trip. We always take more food than we need in case any straglers come along and join us.... which is fine for leftovers when we get back.
What a great thread!!! We were just contemplating our NYE trip, the CSUF tuition that's due the following week and trying to budget it all together.

Typical cost for me is...
$140-160 Round Trip Diesel Cost for Moho
$15-25 for propane for Generator, and appliances/heaters.
$70-90 for fuel for the sand car
$25-40 for food (this goes up if I have more than just me)
Total- 275.00 to 310.00 on the high side.. but when I am by myself I try to run as lean as possible.

I have ALL KINDS of room at home. I was trying to work the numbers out what I would save in gas keeping my trailer in storage down there. Vs draging it out there and back every trip. Then IF I pay in advance to have a spot for "the season" and I have to bring my rail home repairs I still have to pay for a spot I'm not using. Sounds like the sweet set up as long as you KNOW your stuff is going to last the season.Papa Perry wrote:Dunes Edge. I don't have room to store my stuff at home, so it costs me $225 per month to store it vs $100/ month at Dunes Edge.
Gas, Pulling the trailer with the RV would cost approx $200-225 per trip.
Gas in the car is $50 per trip.
So saving $125 per month and $150 per trip means I can go out every weekend and still be in the plus at the end of the season....

Just filled the RV yesterday, $115, I can make a round-trip on a tank (65 gallons),
Gas for the quads (25 gallons 'cause they're 2 strokes) $70,
Food is no extra cost 'cause I'm going to buy it anyway,
Breakfast in Brawley on the way to the dunes is about $10,
Lunch on the way home is about $10,
Extra bottle of JD is $16 (
),
So, I'm at $216 so far per trip. A lot depends on the price of gasoline.
Now, if you want to add in the monthly payment of the motorhome ($450), extra insurance (around $300 per year)(I bought tires for it last year and that came to almost $2,000), it will add up a bit.
I store the motorhome in my side-yard so no cost on that.
But, I'd spend more if I had to and max out my credit cards to keep going!!

Where in the hello are you finding fuel for $1.76.9Washroad wrote:Just filled the RV yesterday, $115, I can make a round-trip on a tank (65 gallons),
!![/b]

Something does not add up correct? Let me know your trick??!!!
----------------------------------------------------------
This season two rails...
Race fuel for seven trips.... hummmmm I'll try to keep better track, 100 gallons of race fuel @ $5.25 per gallon = $525 + tax =
$566 that's enough fuel for three trips, so roughly $188-200 for race fuel
Diesel fuel costs 60-66 gallons every trip, includes generator Roughly $2.70 per gallon = $175 per trip
So total fuel cost is $370 or so....
Food savings if we stay at home we go out and have at least one good meal out maybe two camping we eat in 100% so food cost is -$100.00
If we stay home, we'd go see a useless movie and that with popcorn and ticket price and fuel and dinner after would be $120+so subtract that off also....
$370 - $220 = $150 per trip if its 3 days or 7 days [we don't do no two day trips]
Oh yea, I forgot my oil costs... [two VW's burning/leaking 4-5 quarts of oil per trip] $15 more
Firewood $6.00 per bundle
No toy/No MH payments no trailer payments... insure cost of roughly $1700 per year divided by 17 trips per year add another $100 per trip, if we go another couple of trips, it drops...
So I’m thinking the more I dune the cost per trip goes down!
Less than $250 per trip NET...
put that into your

Duning saves me money, when you subtract the cost for the psychologist and family therapist…

There seems to be some fuzzy math going on, I agree with Obsessed $1.769 cant seem to be possible. Further unless everyone paid cash for the MoHos and enclosed trailers there is the monthly costs for that. Even if you did pay cash for them, you have to figure it is still costing you money to retrieve your upfront investment. For example if you paid $20K for a trailer (without financing) you used that trailer for 5 years. That is still $4k a year to retrieve your investment divided into say 10 trips per year is costing you $400 per trip.
The same math can be used for the toys and vehicle assets. So when you really think about it your costs are higher than you think. I am about the cheapest screw in the dunes, since I Van camp, ride 20 year old bikes and everything is paid for. My gas expense alone, regardless for a 3-5 day dune trip, 25 gals for the bikes, 2 stroke mix and 30 gal for the van is $155. Add in the Cocktail/Beer $40 and $40 for Food (because I eat better at the dunes than home) and $9 BLM dune usage fee. All that is $204.
But my amortized asset cost Van amortized over 10 years (based upon 10 trips) is $50; plus the trike is $12.50 (still going after 20 years). The amortized asset cost are reduced the longer and more times you use them. So for all told down to the knat's *** cost $266.50
Thus cost of actually going is $200-$400 but you have to add in your hidden costs.

Here is some math for you...
I stay in Jason's trailer = $0
I eat Brain's food = $0
I drink anyone who offers beer = $0
I make my girlfriend drive = $0 on gas
I borrow Jason's spare quad = $0
I think Im doing pretty good. All I have to pay for is dog food. Oh, wait, Dune Shredder takes care of that too!!! = $0
Im getting off pretty good!
Now, in reality...
I just bought a Toy Hauler, a gas guzzling truck, and two quads. I bring tons of food and drinks, so Im in the hole, but never really wanted to think about how much. But DS still feeds my dog....

If the tank still had some gas in it, it would even out. Washroad can't do math, so dont confuse him... his tank holds 65 gals, and there was still 16 1/2 gallons in it when he filled up.... = $115 at $2.37 a gallon.gelwell wrote:There seems to be some fuzzy math going on, I agree with Obsessed $1.769 cant seem to be possible.
Im his math tutor, and we are still trying to get him up to multiplication/division. He really struggles with word problems. Sorry its taking so long guys..

So should we add in his house payment too? Or was he going to buy that anyways? You know, we want to be fair in the cost analysis here...washroad wrote:I store the motorhome in my side-yard so no cost on that.

Speaking of fuzzy math:gelwell wrote:There seems to be some fuzzy math going on,
So, $155 + $40 + $40 + $9 = $204.00????gelwell wrote:My gas expense alone, regardless for a 3-5 day dune trip, 25 gals for the bikes, 2 stroke mix and 30 gal for the van is $155. No, $155 + $40 + $40 + $9 = $244.00

And where do you get a $9.00 BLM Dune Useage Permit? I'm paying $90 for my Season Pass.

That's why....gelwell wrote:There seems to be some fuzzy math going on,
A lot of this depends upon the number of trips per year . If you have an annual cost of $5k and you only take two trips [8 nights] per year, you are going to have a high cost/trip number. But $5k divided by 30 or 40 nights.... now that's a different story!!Woodglue wrote:....there are other costs that should also be calc'd into the formula.....
There was a similar thread over the summer where much discussion took place about what is / and is not considered "cost".
For example food: 100% of your food bill for a trip should not be factotred in [unless you subtract some costs of living at home for the same duration (like OBSESSED did)]. But, if you eat better in the dunes than you would at home... then a portion should be added.
While I think gelwell is right about the RV costs [like finance payments, insurance, registration, maintenance, storage, etc], items like Food, Gas, Entertainment [like a trip to Boardmanville], and Electricity should also be considered in the equation!
Now lets take it a step further... It was like 37* when I left the house this morning. You can bet your bottom dollar that the heater was on!

If I was in Glamis last night, the house heater wouldn't have been on [=$saved!]. So, If I include the propane cost for running my RV heater, I should also deduct the natural cost & electricity cost for not needing to run my house heater on those same days.
So, DO THE MATH guys.... here's mine...
Woodglue wrote:The total annual cost is about $3,712.00, divided by 30 camping days per year =$123.00 per day.
I would bet that some can net a saving by taking a dune trip when factoring in ALL the variables.

Woodglue:
I was using the constant of 10 trips per year. $90 divided by 10 = 9. If you use nights instead of trips will drop the number as you have pointed out. It has been said that businesses have 2 accounting books, the one you keep and the one you show the IRS. Meaning you can count your beans many different ways in order to show how much money you have saved or made. But in reality regardless how you do your math we enjoy an expensive life style. I am glad to see there was some agreement of what your true costs can be. Thanks for catching my math error!
But the winner of the day is Grumpy Wookie with the $0 cost, who will soon to be joining the rest of us with the trailer and etc.

I disagree.gelwell wrote:But in reality regardless how you do your math we enjoy an expensive life style.
With a new truck, a TH, and three quads, I can attest that a trip to the dunes is cheaper than a trip to vegas, Hawaii, a cruise, etc. Heck, our longest dune trip is still chepaer than a one week camping trip we take up in Shaver Lake, Ca. every year.

I've detailed novels about this in other threads before. Without getting into it all...
Short of hiking into the hills and dropping a tent in the grass, a dune trip represents the cheapest vacation one can take!!

Here is everything I have had to spend latley. We bought all new gear, so....
T/H = $27,000
Truck = $27,500
Honda 450R = $6,500
Rebuilding 250R = $too much!!!
Equipment for T/H = gifts from everyone for x-mas please....
Gas = I better have my own refinery (6 miles per gallon in the new truck)
Year pass = $90.00
Food = $100 per trip
Beer = double that of food
Gun to protect myself against illegal immigrants = $800.00
Tools to fix my truck when it breaks = $200
Parts for the needed repairs = $1,000
School to learn how to install said parts = $25,000 (but you can break that up into 4 one year terms I guess since everyone else is doing it)
Extra bathroom accessories for my girlfriend to be happy = $422 per month
Shock colar for my dog that runs off = $49.99 in three easy installments
The enjoyment of hearing duners do math = PRICELESS

Hmm....ASA supporting membership......and donations?
Grumpy Wookie will be really grumpy if the dunes close prior to wearing out all those new toys!
(I would venture a bet that Grumpy and most others in this thread are supporting members but just didn't factor the costs in!)

Thanks Washroad. I stopped chasing you and Gail when I decided that the money was worth saving the precious sand...
Yes, I am an ASA supporting member, I joined at the Sand Show this year. I dont know why my aviator doesnt have the little ASA sticker in it, but I am a card carrying supporting member.
I got a cool license plate frame out of it too!
But you are right Greg, I forgot to factor in that cost. I guess I didnt think of that as an expense, as much as a necessity in order to support a sport I love. Kind of like buying underwear, you dont notice the money you spend on something that is needed.

A whole lot less than this ski trip to New Mexico. Snow sucks or should I say lack of. it finnally snowed but completly missed the ski mt. Indoor sports have been fun for me but not for Hoop. He lost his favorite things to lick today.
I should have done what Obsessed did. I would have saved a ton of $$ and would have had more
Now lets see for a week-end trip I spend about $150-200.
$75.00 gas for truck
$35.00 gas for Quad
$$ food and ice and maybe a couple $ to help out the ASA supporting venders at the flats.
