What did you break this weekend...?

Well, I spent Saturday working on my car, getting ready for the season. I did all the maintenance I had been putting off all summer, including inspection, clean, and re-assembly of CV joints.

I decided to go out to Ocotillo Wells on Sunday and make some hot laps with a few friends who were already out there just to make sure my car was running well. Our first 3 day dez trip is coming up next weekend so I wanted to be ready.

Late Sunday I tagged a large pumpkin sized rock while doing about 70 mph down a wash. It grenaded my Center Line wheel, tore the side wall of the tire, causing some of the steel belts (wire) to wrap around my axle, tearing the lower CV boat (all of one day old), getting wound up inside the CV and brake caliper.

It's all back together already, sans the wheel and tire...hopefully I can get that together before this Friday...I'd hate to miss my first real dez trip of the season.

Very funny Kev.

Damage not too bad after all. Just found a place (US Wheel) in the Cajon Zone that going to be able to repair my $300 wheel for $60 bucks. The CV was fine, just had to get all the wire out, clean, re-pack, add a new boots, and re-assemble everything. Now it's just sitting there waiting for the wheel / tire to be put back on and I'm on the road again..

Well I can't compare to that. But I had a $5 fuel filter break on my DS this weekend at Pismo. I was having fuel issues and when I went down and wiggled the plastic filter it broke off! My quick field repair of cutting an inch off of my gas cap vent hoze and using it to bypass the filter got me back to camp!

Everything ran great. New paddles on the buggy are AWESOME!! They really hook up now.

I cut my off road teeth in Rockatilla but since going to the dunes for the last 30 years has me spoiled to stay off the hard pack just for these and many other reasons.

Funny thing...the moment I hit that rock I thought of NoRocksPlease when he first started posting here. He had just discovered the sand dunes and how much better they were than the hard pack.

I still love the hard pack sometimes though, eventhough I'm a duner at heart. Ocotillo is an easy day trip since it's onyl 1 1/2 hour drive.

Let's keep this thread going all season and see who breaks the most stuff...

C-16 at 11.15 per gallon

OUCH

Guess it is just the cost of having fun. I will gladly pay it. I am soooooooooooooo glad that desert season is here

That C16 will kill ya. I've always complained about paying $7 for 111., now I feel even better, thanks.

Will this was week 2 for me. Lost my main (20') awning on the way out. Ripped the whole thing right off my moho and it almost took out my friends rig who was travelling behind me. I'm guessing $1000 to replace/repair. Also lost another tire, which shredded to death. It was a wheel and tire I borrowed from my friend since I tweaked a wheel and blew a tire the weekend before (still not back from repair). Now I have to replace that too. It was still worth it though.

Next trip - 2 weeks

Glad I could help you out.

Was this on your trailer?? If so, you would have to think that you have a bearing or brake problem that is causing the the tire to heat and go flat. Hard to believe that it would be bad luck hitting a road hazard two weeks in a row.

Nope! Since I bent one of my rear wheels last week, I had to borrow a set of wheels and tires from a friend to run on my car this weekend. The tires were old Desert Tracks that just were not made for the type of HP, driving, and terrain we were doing this weekend. They bascially got ripped apart about 15 miles into our first run.

Seperated my left shoulder. Caught the corner of a witches eye and the rappy threw me and then landed on me. Took 20 minutes to recuperate, got back on her and rode her out. My owey hurts

Trip 3 Report:

I came back unscaved...sweet. My buddy Adam spun the splines on one of his hubs. It tooks us a couple hours to get it back to camp by towing it with my car. His cars pretty heavy so my car started overheating a couple times so we had to give it a rest once or twice.

My buddy Wes broke a front spindle just as it was getting dark Saturday night. We took the shock off, put the spindle back together, bound it together with safety wire, ducks tape, and zip ties, and managed to drive it back to camp. By then it was beer o'clock.

Good weekend!!! Much less people out there then I expected. I was very Surprised at the lack of crowd.

I hope that this is a sign that there will be a reduced number of people out there for Thanksgiving. I know there are a lot of people that come out the Friday before and stay the whole week out there. Then again you can wish in one hand and ...... well you know how the saying goes

I'm serious when I say this weekend was UNCROWDED. Dune buggy flats was less than a normal off weekend. There has been a discussion on Glamis Dunes.com about how many people feel every weekend has been less crowded so far this year than the comparible weekend a year earlier. I say I'm very glad about this. I hope this economy weeds out some "fair weather" duners!!!

I collided with a quad while riding my bike through the bushes between the canal and sand highway. I had a quick flight through the air followed by a gentle landing on the only non-vital part of my body (my head). My hand is a bit messed up and my knee it about 2 sizes to big (must have hit the handlebar) but other than that nothing too serious. Could have been worse. Safety gear DOES work.
The impact was directly on the seal of the front fork, so the upper tube needs to be replaced and the the fork rebuilt, I am guessing about $600 in parts and labor. I am hoping my body and the bike is going to be ready for new years

We had a bent axle on a Raptor 700 in camp but that was it for us. Of all the vendors out there, there wasn't ANYONE with a rear axle for a 700 by the Glamis store or on Gecko road vendor fairs. Ended up having a guy over at Gecko Rd straighten the bent axle for $60 and all was good after about 2 hours.
