Attendance???? 2009 Sand Sport Super Show (SSSS) Sept 18, 19

Post by DuneRookie »

So was it me or did this years attendance seem really light? I walked the whole show and barely bumped into any one in the crowd. Also appeared to have even fewer vendors than before. Anyone??

They were all at home watching Obama's campaign speeches. #-o

I was gonna go Saturday after work but I ended up going to Temecula to interview Scotty Stephens (newest member of Metal Mulisha's freestyle team), instead. Then took my son to Pala to take some picts on Sunday.

I thought it was way lower this year too. In fact, I only spent about half the time I usually spend, to go through the entire show.

Many buggy vendors even showed the same cars as last year....and there was way too much space dedicated to SXS...it should almost be called the Sand Sports SXS show IMO.

I stopped by the ASA both and non of my bros were working so I just picked up a shirt and moved along.

I admit I skipped this year and last year. Two years ago it was just too crowded and too much SXS stuff that I had zero interest in.

Crowd being down could help lure me back...but if it's still a lot of SXS stuff then even if it's not jam packed overcrowded it's not going to lure me back anytime soon.

Though to be totally honest timing is the main reason I missed it last year and this year. Just have other commitments this time of year and can't fit in the time to travel for the sand show.

This was the first year I didn't go in 7 or 8 years.
For me it was mostly timing.
We were planning to cram a half-day visit into a already full weekend to go look at new trailers. But, we found one in Corona last week, so there was no need to go down for that anymore.
When it comes to these shows, I'm of the mind that after you've seen one, you've probably seen them all. Even from year to year, there isn't much change.
They don't usually have very much stuff for a quad guy to drool over, so it's actually kind of boring for me to walk around and see SXS stuff. At these shows, I'm actually more interested in visiting the BLM, UDG & CORVA booths than I am with any of the product vendors.

The best thing for me about the show is always seeing the latest and greatest new buggies. For a couple of years, it was a real race to see who came up with the raddest new car. This year there was too many repeat cars, which bummed me out.

Also, the SXS thing I've just never gotten into. That's probably why I got through the show so fast because I just bypassed all the SXS, which was I'd say at least 1/2 of the show.

I really enjoyed the Sand Show this year.

I want to say Thank You to Brian Trapp and Flo Haynes for organizing all of the hundreds of details that needs to be coordinated each year. The SSSS planning committee had everything well thought out and ready to go.

The ASA booth was staffed by the hardest working volunteers I have ever seen.
Too many volunteers to risk thanking you all by name and forgetting someone.
It was great seeing old friends and meeting new volunteers.

The ASA Board of Directors were on hand all weekend to answer questions and pitch in where needed.

Tim Wight and his crew kept us well fed all weekend. Board Member Gary Jordan and Paul Bunyan's Firewood sponsored a BBQ Saturday night. So when you need firewood you know who to call.

The JRS Award ceremony was fantastic.

I left the show exhausted Sunday night, but overwhelmed at how hard everyone worked to make the SSSS a success for the ASA.

I am humbled and privileged to be associated with the incredible people who make up the ASA.

Thank you all
See you in the sand..

Has it been 8 years or 9 that I've done the SSSS? I just can't remember zactly.

Loren, I was there all weekend. All ya had to do was ask for me and I would have been there! George and Dione found me a couple of times! :D

I seldom see much of the show, I'm too busy with stuff and my phone kept ringing and I kept looking for a place where I could hear what they were saying!

I got a good little sunburn sitting there selling raffle tickets and I was really busy.

I want to thank Warrior Lifestyles for the water!!! You saved many a life this weekend! \:D/ \:D/

I want to thank everyone that helped so much and made it look like we knew just wth we were doing.

Saturday night at the JRS Awards was one of the best things I've been to in years!

I'm still a bit tired, my voice hasn't come back yet and my feet still hurt a bit, but I'm glad the aSa put on such a great show. We couldn't do it without the many dedicated and tireless volunteers that spend their time and energy to lend a hand! Thank you!

I was there and I looked for you guys. I hung out and chatted with a cute girl working the both, bought a shirt, looked around once more, and then hit the show.

I sent Gene a text message trying to meet up but he never responded :?

So you found Larry?

Did ya'll see THIS??? About the coolest thing ever at the SSSS.

Oh my God...What a strong end to slow start. Once again unbeliveable the people that come out of the wood work to help the ASA.

In no piticuliar order the people that gave their all plus a bit more to help out in the raffle booth(s)

Lisa Makley
Pam
Justin Bucchi
Jacob
Brian Trapp
Jan (what is her last name?)
Julie Krough
Nannette Shallcross
Drew Hove
Harold
Ronny Ward and his little brother.
Lisas mom.
Tosh, Nina, and Steve Lemay
Marvin Shaw
Chuk Moore
Cricket
Jim Collns daughter
Some girl named Kelly?
Rea
Reas Friends
Sorry I'm horrible with names

I have no idea what so ever where all of these people came from but they show up and help. And by help I mean work their arses off. Not only do they work hard at the raffle booth (s) but they have to put up with the dang DJ, hid mash ups, Trivia, hula hoop, and limbo contests.

A huge thanks to
Brian
Flo
Lisa Misner
Lynn
Dwayne
Scott Swanka
Bill Jones
Bob Mason
Jerry Seaver,
and anybody else who helped ME with set up, questions, or complaints. Its a two, or three way street, with all the people helping others at these shows to pull it off right like we all did.
I'm still a bit sore in places I don't quite understand, got at least 24 hours of sleep since Sunday at 6 PM when I got home. I'm ready to do it again next year. Of course "next year" will be here before we know it.

I got a message about not going and responded with a K. Sorry but I didnt make the show at all. I had to go to Yuma for a memorial service for a man who lived across the street from me and was a big part of my life. He was a friend, mentor, desert dad and US Marine. I was there to represent myself and my family. It was something I found out about literally a few hours before going to the show. He was too important to me not to attend his service.

GB your text may have come while I was commuting in the mountains or somethin'. Sorry guys I really wanted to go but doesnt sound like I missed much.

Oh man, sorry to hear that.

My trip was somewhat last minute as I had trouble finding a sitter for the kids (Mom was out of town). I actually bought you a beer while I was there so now you owe me

Man, this was the second year in a row that I missed (I want to know more about the JRS nominees and winner!); this time I was on a plane to Denver on the 19th, and I still haven't made it home yet! I'm in DC at the moment, and will be here until Tuesday!

Does the show provide actual attendance numbers. Like this year over last year?
