what in the world is wrong with people???????"

Post by d_sheffs »

So for our glamis trip last weekend, I very carefully packed my truck with FIRST RATE lumber for firewood. no nails or debris, al stacked to haul the most I can fit it my truck. It was a lot of weight so when we got to the dunes i loaded a nice large stack right next to camp. so we come back from a dune ride and I see a guy "moving in" on my wood. I yell out $2 a stick!!! and go over and inform him, yes that is my wood. he tells me he is camped right across from us, and thought we might have just "left" the wood. LOL, yeah right, i haul it all out there to LEAVE it. anyway he sings the blues how they don't have any wood. I say, "hey buddy, youcan see we have a lot of wood, go ahead a take a little". "ok, thanks" he says and loads two milk crates and offers me a beer.

In the morning, we notice OUR ENTIRE STACK is GONE. we look over to see our wood neatly stacked in this guys camp! WTF i am like you have to be kidding me. my WIFE is pissed. she immediately goes over and says" uh, my kids wanted to make smores tonight, i am sending some guys over to get some wood". This group then sarts scampering around and stashing the wood. we come over and take TWO milk crates back. while they eat dinner in the motorhome, we raid their trailer and STEAL BACK our wood.

this guys then discovers later he is out of OUR WOOD ( we spotted he did have a small amount of wood he brought) and has the BALLS to come over and tell us " you could have asked if you needed more" . "you told us it was ok to take the wood". It is a good thing at this point i had not drank that much because at this point I wanted to just pound this guy. I told him "pound sound you *&%$&^ jerk!" ......."i said i was happy to help out a duner but where the )(&**&%& do you get off taking every last piece after we went to bed?"

needless to say that was pretty much the end of it. I guess just another of lifes learning examples our group will be talking about for years to come.

Now why would you say that? I camp on Gecko Road and would never even think of stealing someone's wood. That's just wrong. Unfortunately, there are a-holes everywhere. True duners know that you need to bring your own firewood, WITH NO NAILS OR METAL!!

Across the wash or across the Flats just seems like too far to carry an arm-load of firewood. Not to mention the foot prints in the sand / dirt that would lead from where the pile used to be to where it is now.
Plus, not bringing firewood to the dunes in November is kind of a Newby move. A newby might prefer pavement over dirt. = Gecko Rd.

I cut wood for the winter and yesterday I was using the woodsplitter to split it and the work is kind of mundane. It is hard work and dangerous but it gives the mind time to wander, I've been running the splitter for close to 30 years now. The thought came to me that maybe I could haul and sell firewood to supplement a trip down to Glamis. I go through 3 to 4 cords a year to heat my home in the winter and I stock pile as much as 12 to 20 cords. In Reno firewood goes for about $250.00 a cord of pine/fir mix. Would there be a market for wood down there or would the cost of security offset the profit.
I wouldn't be ready this year but next year maybe. We had season ski passes at Squaw Valley and we can't use them from X-mass to New Years so that would be the time slot for a trip. It is not the kind of dunning ( crowds ) we like to do but the show would be the focus. My daughter is out of school and work is dead then.
Minus the theives, what kind of money can be made from wood sold off the back of my truck or direct sales to a store down there?
A cord of wood is 4'x4'x8' I could haul about 1 1/2 cords and still have room for the toys.

Wow  Maybe the thread should be WOODPIRATES  I've never had anyone take wood from our camp, but I have seen the scavangers :| They ask if you're going to leave that wood & we say you're welcome to it if you need/want it :) I thought that was "LIKE YA KNOW...NORMAL"

P.S. My kids pick up wood when someone leave it after they go home sometimes

It's been about a year since we bought any wood, but when we did the ½ cord prices were $180 ~ $220 depending on the avocado / eucalyptus mix ratio. I would think that most people wouldn’t buy more than a wheel barrow of wood out there. If you got serious about selling more that a wheelbarrow load, you should have a vendor permit too.
They do sell wood at the Glamis Vendors at a couple different booths.

the guys was in his late 40's wife and kids in his group. average size/build. had an old school rig, small cab-over RV late 80's, maybe eary 90's with a small enclosed trailer of same era. quads only, also a three wheeler. obviously not a glamis newbie.

It's smart for me to stay cool, i onlyy weigh 150lbs. it is LUCKY for this guy some of the more obnoxious members of the group i hang with were not there that weekend, I have no doubt they would have hauled his ***** out of the trailer and a rumble would have ensued. even funnier part is my WIFE is the one who initially was madder about this than i was it was she who snuck into their camp while they were in the RV eating and began REPOSESSING our wood piece by piece.

are you kidding me? is this satire or something? since when is recreating at glamis a "need" , "necesity" or "right"? I am coming over to your camp next trip to sing you the blues how i dont have any fuel and you need to share some because you have too much. I am so sick of this kind of liberal babel it make me puke.

In case you can't read, I DID give this guy some wood, even though he lied and told me he had none. If catering to a thief and liar is the american thing to do, i am tearing up my citizenship card.

Sounds kind of mild to me...especially for Texas :D

We always bring a big pile of firewood...usually have an extra trailer just for the wood. And that always means people are stopping by asking to have or buy wood. Which we pretty much always turn down, it's a lot of work collecting and hauling that wood and with a big camp it takes a big fire to keep everyone warm.

But - on the other hand we do welcome anyone who wants to to join us at our fire if theirs is too small or they didn't bring any wood. Wood we hoard - but fire we share. Have met a lot of people who ended up joining our camp (some just for a night, some probably for a lifetime) due to this policy.

Here’s the thing. Not sure where you are planning on selling the wood…BUT…

Small/average size bundles of wood are available at Gilmores and Big Belly Crew at Vendors Row, and I also suspect at Sweet Maries or Crazy Kevin’s off Gecko Road. The price is much better then what one pays for smaller bundles at...say..the local Vons. Since I know the owner of Paul Bunyan’s Fire Wood out of Arizona, I am SURE there is also a wood vendor in the South Dunes. He may actually be supplying all the vendors in the dunes. I know he use to.

No one is going to buy an entire cord of wood from you in Glamis, unless it is one of the vendors. You’d also have to have it pre bundled, whether you sell it direct or to a third party.

So, you will be competing with established wood sellers. And, you’d need an Imperial County roving sellers permit to sell to the public off of your truck.

Up to you to decided if you’d make any money.

If this is a one time business opportunity you may want to consider going from camp to camp with a sign on your rig. In most stores down here they sell about 6 pieces of Pine for about $5. And that's not Pine with me, since that is a tad expensive. But I would think you could sell 10-15 pieces for $10. But really HSSC is it really worth dragging all that wood down here? What if you dont sell it all? The times people start to run out of wood is when we are all here for awhile like Thxgivng and Xmas. So you could make a go of it. But selling your wood may take away precious riding time. Afterall that is why we all go duning. So then it becomes the decision of what is really important, making money or making memories.

Generally though most camps seem to be pretty well set for the exception of this wood challenged indivdual. The guy is either lazy or cheap or both and decided to make liberties with Dsheffs wood.

OK next time put it on the RIGHT side of camp so they don't think you LEFT it. :D

I have been known to spend a week or two out in the Desert and am always thankful for those who bring a few to many logs for the fire and a quick cruise down and around the area, after people have left, like on Monday or Tuesday, will net me a pretty good load of wood for the campfire.

To just go up and "Borrow" some from a sleeping Dunner is, I think, even beyond what the socialists had in mind.

Gelwell, you are a 100% right, do I want to spend my time trying to sell fire wood or watching the show or if I'm lucky riding smooth sand out in the technical stuff with some of you guys or just me and my daughter. I'd be praying for wind the whole way down ( help to push me there ) and some cold air behind to make my product a hotter item. I know C. Kevin and a vendor would be the way to go. Just get rid of the stuff or just start to sell the stuff up here in Reno like I used to do back in the eighties. I sold many cords back in the day and with that money I put a down payment on this piece of land that I eventually built a 3,600 sq ft. home with the help of many and my wonderful wife.

Times are a bit harder now and I'm not making the money I used to and just paying the property taxes and insurance on all the stuff is everything I can do these days and still live the lifestyle I've enjoyed and made my family a part of. It will just take a bit more advance planning/hard work ( I'm not afraid of ,more, hard work ) to pull off a trip next year to Glamis. My last trip to Glamis was 1989, just after Thanksgiving and a major blow. We camped at Ogolbie out of a 83 4x4 Toyota/campershell and we dunned our brains out that trip. Everything was smooth and no one was there. I drove my brains out and the Highjumper Sandcar held together ( one weld job at the place with all the dollars bills on the walls ). I do want to go back and take my daughter to that wonderful place.
