Clyde Crossing has been ripped out

Post by Woodglue »

This just in....
Clyde Crossing is gone.
GlamisSandDuner texted me photos that he just took.
He returns from Glamis tomorrow and will post his pics here.
He confirms that Wash Rd has been graded all the way down to Clyde, but the aprons approaching the track on both sides are no longer there.

He also confirms that the Crossing at Wash 23 is probably not passable with a Truck and Trailer. Leave along the cables and padlocks. He'll post pics of this as well.

The Railroad never did want us crossing the tracks. There were signs on both sides of the crossing stating something to the effect of "Authorized Railroad Personnel Only".

We talked to people that were camped out at 40 and they said that they took the wash road in from the store. It looks like a bulldozer took and shoved a big mound of dirt in front of the tracks on the wash side. On the Ted Kipf side the bulldozer scraped across the road where it has a two foot ledge that one would have to drive up to cross the tracks. Above and beyond that one would have to be able to cross the railroad tracks since the wood to cross it is gone.

Well I dunno if this is a good or bad thing. Probably a bad thing. I can't complain about something that was never supposed to be used being taken away. It was nice to have, and while it lasted.

Thanks for going down and checking that out George. I thought something was up given the report Glenn gave me on Saturday.

Oh this sucks BIG TIME. If there's anything worse than driving down wash road to the 20-washes it's got to be driving down to 40 on that side. Getting out of the dunes on a big holiday weekend from 40 is going to be an absolute nightmare.

First I find out today that Danny boy was elected, now this :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

Any new news on this? Is the chance of the crossing being available for Thanksgiving basically nil?

Not long at all!
We were camped in Wash 24 over Thanksgiving. From my camp, we watched people use the crossing at Wash23  that's actually in Wash24.

At first, it was just quads and short rails.
It took four people to stand on the lower cables and raise the upper cables while a 5th Person drove the vehicle through.
Sometime during the weekend, someone removed the upper cables. The slack in the lower cables allowed a vehicle to drive over them as long as both front tires hit the cable at the same time.

On Monday morning [Dec01] UPRR Staff arrived and reinstalled one upper cable on the west side of the tracks.

This is what it looked like after that.

how was the drive down to 24 via wash road? Did you see any tow/camp vehicles cross the tracks @ clyde or just dune vehicles. I would think that the Railroad will only use the repair as more reason to fence off the entire westside of the tracks.

In regards to the repair being justification to the RR, you are correct!

Don't mess with the UPRR's stuff folks! [-X

Clyde Crossing is the one at Wash39, it has been ripped out completely. To the extent, a jeep would have a hard time getting over the tracks there.

The crossing at Wash24 is the one pictured in my post of yesterday.
From Hwy 78 to W24, is a 26 minute drive pulling the trailer at 10~15 MPH. A little whooped out, but not as soft as years past so you wont get stuck. Last year, getting past wash 19 was a problem due to the soft sand. Not so this year.

Just beware camping that far down. Only family oriented, rule endorsing, law abiding folks are allowed pass Wash 20.

During our trip up washroad from Ogilby for the monster ride, I looked for the crossing at Cactus. That crossing has been taken out too. That means other than the wash 10 under pass there is no other crossing of the tracks than at 78 and Ogilby road (20 miles to the south).

Why can't the RR realize their liability here. Too many fools have been hit already. By cutting off access, espically to Boardmanville they are creating a huge safety concern. A concern that the ASA, BLM, & the county should address. Cause we all know crossings will continue.

Chopped that was my immediate concern as well. If they dont keep the crossings people regardless how idiotic will try to cross the tracks with devasting results. We lost 3 kids last season to impatience and crossing the tracks when they went around the crossing guard. I saw a samurai get stuck on the tracks after some girls couldnt get under wash 10. When the train came by it popped that samurai out in the air about 20 feet in the air and landed on what was left of the car. I unfortunately see will only be problem in the future.

Over President's weekend, we were camped in Wash24 again.
Several times, the UPRR Police came by on Wash Rd.
At night, you could them shinning a spot light on the cables at the W24 crossing.
Thankfully, no one messed with the cables that entire weekend.

Something to note here, even getting to the crossing on the East Side of the tracks is not possible with anything more than a rail or quad, as there is a very intentional 4' vertical drop-off graded where the approach apron would be.
