Post by gmarroqu » Tue Mar 23, 2010 11:22 am

Was in Glamis this weekend took a retired army vet out to the flagpole and it's down and flag is gone... Anybody know what happened and is there any plans to put it back up?

People need to be informed that it is sacreligious to mess with the pole and flag. Pass the word: "Don't mess with the Flag Pole." :!:

Went by there Sat. afternoon, 5-6 cars and a bunch of quads were putting it up. I thought they were just changing flags. Didn't stop as I had just thrown a chain and was limping back to camp...

We rode by the Flagpole on Friday and noticed it was down and the flag was reclipped to the base. We properly folded the flag and took it with us knowing we would return it or fix the pole. On Saturday, we took a break at the Flagpole, and while we were there John from Outfront Motorsports and his "posse" also stopped for a break. We were able to rally the troops and bend the pole back up. In the process, the pole did crack about half tube, but is still standing. If someone has the resources and time, it does need some TLC to be fixed correctly! Thanks to all of those who helped get the "Colors" back up! =D>

I was at the flag pole on Sunday. It was still up. Thanks to those who re-set it. That does explain, however, the rather precarious mounting we observed.

Structurally, for a pole that size and heigth, it needs more then just some TLC. Since it isn't anchored into the ground, I strongly suggest some welding and support wires like the ones used for TV antennenas. Or, better still, a longer pole. Make the hole in top of the box the correct size, insert the pole all the way in until it bottoms out in the box, with a ring on it to be welded to the top of the box and pole on the outside plus the guide/support wires. That should do it.

Also, FWIW, based on how I beleive it was originally mounted with (4) sheet metal screws into the box, I would not say that someONE took it down. The wind was more then likely to blame. Sure, it's possible that some jerks did it, but there are other reasonable explaintions. Besides, if a jerk(s) took the thing down, why not take the flag with them?

I think if someone had enough disrepect to take the pole down, then that person would not have the respect to pick the flag off the ground (assuming it was touching the ground) and take it with them.
There are supposed to be some amazing winds in Glamis next week.
National Weather Service forecast for Brawley is currently calling for:
17mph on Tues.
26mph on Wed.
33mph on Thurs.
I can't remember the last time I saw 33mph in the forecast!

33 mph winds that is not good. I am leaving that day for the dunes and setting up camp in that kind of wind really bites. Not to mention the dunerookie (last of the ghetto campers) will not be a happy camper. It will be good riding but you know...

Oh yeah. don't like big winds. Sucks as a ghetto camper. Now when are we talking about high winds. Just checked forcast for April 1st and most I found is 15mph. I can do 15. Just saying.

Sounds like you are trying to make me skeered. Well it's working. JK. I look at the Yuma weather forcast since we are closer being in south dunes. I can handle 15 mph or so but much more gets to be obnoxious.

Just an observation about the flagpole. Seems like some person thought it would be cool to try and climb as high up the pole as possible to put a sticker. U know the old game my sticker is higher than yours. Well it seems that's what pulled the pole down unintended of course but I'm thinking a good coat of grease or something... It's old glory just stop by reflect and hydrate. Stop climbing the pole leave that to the professionals...
