Less Visitors To Sand Dunes

Imperial Valley, CA May 31 - People who spent Memorial weekend at the sand dunes in the Imperial Valley were struck by a strange sight for this time of year, the lack of a crowd.

For years the dunes have been one of the most popular places in our area for Memorial Day vacationers, but this year very few people spent time there.

Some of those who did hit the sand say they don't know why others stayed away, but some think the combination of the heat and the bad economy may have kept people at home.

And here:
Count down for Off-roaders
Written by George Gale

(Desert visitor count way down)…Some say it is because of the economy.

Others say the heat or possibly the aftershocks that continue to roll through the Imperial Valley from the April 4 earthquake. Whatever the reason, off-road visitors are staying away this Memorial Day Holiday weekend. No official count has been made available, but the numbers are way down. The Memorial Day weekend is normally one of the big weekends, being the last holiday weekend before summer. New Years and Thanksgiving are the biggest weekend for desert visitors in the Glamis sand dunes.

I can tell you I only made it to the dunes ONCE last year

Mine is not a financial problem, NO, NO, NO! I cannot get the time off of work and many of my friends have stopped going. So my opportunities to go are few and far between #-o

We were a little too busy welcoming our daughter into the world :)

About the best excuse I can think of to miss a weekend in the sand!

I was out at Ocotillo Wells over the Memorial Weekend. Very small crowd out there and there was no traffic on the 78/S2/79 going home. I have to believe that it is the economy.
The real egalitarians are not the people who want to redistribute wealth to the poor, but those who want to extend to the poor the ability to create their own wealth, to lift themselves up, instead of trying to tear others down. Earning respect, including self-respect, is better than being a parasite. Thomas Sowell
