Free! ATV Safety Certification Training Continues at Imperial Sand Dunes
The El Centro Field Office is pleased to announce the continuation of the popular ATV training course for young riders. The first classes scheduled in the dunes over the Halloween weekend, on October 29 and 30. Since the program began in 2009, 664 young riders have received this important and required training, funded through a California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Commission grant obtained by the American Desert Foundation.

Offered free of charge to California residents aged 6-17 years old, the classes provide the training youngsters need to keep them safe, while satisfying certain state requirements for young riders. Riders interested in attending the class must bring an ATV that is the correct size for them, and wear the appropriate safety equipment (helmet, gloves, goggles and proper footwear). Classes start promptly at 9:00am in the Imperial Sand Dunes at Duner’s Diner (Gordon’s Well) and Glamis Flats (Vendor Row 2); and at Superstition Mountain OHV Open Area (Oct. 29 only).

Participants are encouraged to register for the class at 800-887-2887. For more information and additional training dates, please visit http://www.blm.gov/ca/isdra.

Is preregistration required? Sometimes dune trips need flexability.

Can adults take the training as well? Good to know what your kids are being taught.

Will the mfg's pay for adult training? They fund training for ATV owners.

Just wanted to know.

The most accurate answers will likely come from the source - the ATV Safety Institute.
http://www.atvsafety.org/asi.cfm
Phone: (800) 887-2887
Hours : 6:00AM to 8:00PM Pacific Std. Time

Anyone can attend the training as an observer for free, but you don't get a certificate. Training for adults and youths are available at most, if not all, training sites. Kids under 16 are free. Adults may be free if you purchased a new ATV from a participating manufacturer (check with ASI). Advance signup is best if you want to ensure a spot at the class; not sure if it's required.

Registered by phone. They said no problem & said they would have a loaner ready for us since we only have 1 90cc machine & 2 kids under 16. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Took the class last Saturday afternoon. 1/2 day spent with the kids learning ATV Safety. ASI says we'll be getting 3 (2 250cc's & 1 90cc) incentive checks :) It would be 4 but my daughter isn't old enough to train on a full size machine & we only had 1 qualifying youth machine (TRX90) because Polaris didn't participate till Sept 05. They said we would get incentives all the way back to my 88 TRX250R

Spend the day reinforcing safety rules with the kids & get some $$$ It seems like a very good course for kids & 1st time rider/owners that may keep them from making some of those painful rookie mistakes
