Which Cell Phone service providers work in Glamis???

Post by KEVPOPPAPUMP »

Just wondering what do you all have for Cell Phone Service Providers? I have Nextel and it only works around Gecko Road. We stay on Olds Road and it is dead there as is Cingular. Verizon occasionally works but I wouldn't rely on it. I think I better start packing the 2m Amateur Radio Handheld. Does BLM monitor any Ham frequencies or CB channels for emergencies?

I use AT&T. It works the majority of the time from wash road, BMV or Gecko road.
It didn't work well from Dumont. Except between the two white poles on the road in.

As far as I know, BLM does not monitor Ham but their is a good number of ASA members that are ham operators and the network is growing. There is also a open repeter on the 2M band.

I use cellular one, not always a strong signal, but works in most areas, as long as you can get to some "high sand".

A T T works O k at Glamis, not at all at Dumont.
Sometimes you can move around a little and get service, but thats assuming you can move!! Those cheap walkie talkie's are a Joke, so is a C B radio. Can't comment on Ham radio, maybe someday I will give that a try.

My Cingular Wireless worked on pad 2.5 at the end of the pad, the whole time. In the motorhome, outside the motorhome. My Verizon had NO SERVICE. I keep 2 phones just to be safe.

I use verizon, and I have little to no problem getting out if Im anywhere between the canal and comp hill. If im on th eother side of comp(between comp and the store) I have some problems. If I really want a great signal, I go to the top of osborne lookout and it's crystal clear.

Well the verdict seems to be AT&T. I was considering just getting a prepaid minutes phone for the Glamis riding season.

Right now 7/11 is offering a great deal. The phone, with tax, costs $107 and you get a $50 rebate from AT&T and another $50 rebate from 7/11 (after rebate you're only paying tax). And it comes with a $25 phone card rebate, and the phone comes with $10 worth of minutes to start you off. These phones come with text messaging, voice mail, games, holster, car adapter, home charger, and earpiece. I picked a couple up for the boys (shhhhhh it's a surprise) and Bryan and I liked them so much we picked up two more for us.

I absolutely recommend the prepaid way to go and this deal in particular... no contracts, no fuss. Oh, and it comes in a red box with a green bow :D

Except when I try to call you Chuck from the east side and all I get is your voice mail. I've been using AT&T for years out there with no problems. Oh, there is one problem. People call me to see if they can get propane and then never show up.....Chuck!

Chuck, not a problem. I had guessed that you went to town. I would have done the same thing. All you did was get me to the store a few minutes earlier than normal and it turned out that there were people needing propane for their turkey. That happens every Thanksgiving. Turkey's half done and the wife is yelling at the guy for forgetting to fill up before they left town. I have to laugh!

We just switched from Verizon (sucks!) to Nextel based on dune usage. Everyone in our group that has Nextel's always has service. And the direct connect *really* came in handy over Tday. One of the buggy's in our group rolled right near China Wall and we needed parts. I DC'd camp, told them what we needed and they a couple of guys from our group at the end of Gecko w/ the parts. As it was, we limped back to camp in the dark. If we'd needed to go to camp, go to Marie's to buy the parts and then head back, it would have been WAAAY later.

We also called one of the latecomers from our group from the top of China Wall, no patchiness or anything.

My vote is for Nextel.

Sue,

We think we are in for MLK weekend but I just received arbitration notice and might have to be in San Francisco through the 16th. :(

But also we would be camped with my parents in a different location if we do make it.

But the phone is always available...you just have to find me!

I haven't had a problem with Verizon service but we usually camp on Gecko Road or at Gordons. If in doubt, go to a high spot whether it be the top of the dune or the top of the RV.

Something not mentioned yet is that the phone models themselves have a lot to do with call performance (e.g., some work better than others).

Extending the antenna also improves performance. In addition, something like your head can actually block the signal levels enough in weak signal areas to cause havoc with the call performance.

KFXBob

Post by KFXBob »

The phone does make a difference, we have 3 phones in the family, 2 work out at Glamis and 1 don't. Make sure you get one with an extendable antenna or with a jack for an external ant.

That is strange..I have the cheapest tri-mode AT&T offers, no extendable antena, no jack for an antena and it works great (except around home!!! :x )

Most of the phones in our group have trouble...I usually pass mine around to anyone who needs it.

Does anyone know what is being built behind the store, near the end of the old drag strip? Last I saw, it looked like someone was beginning to build a tower (cellular tower) at that site, but I haven't seen much progress towards completing the tower. Could it be a cell tower in the making and if so, does anyone know which carrier(s) will use the tower?

I have Cingular and camp in the washes; needless to say, Cingular is worthless on that side of the dunes. I loose my signal once I pass Osborne on SR 78.

All 3 of our phones are ATT giveaways, the older 2 work, Nokia 5160's, and the new Nokia 8260 is very selective where it wants to work, and then will cut out on you. I too have problems at home, have to go outside to get signal. A word of warning!! I have had it happen 3 times, the call from Glamis goes thru a mexican tower at Mexicali, and costs way more per minute, like .50 a minute, If I remember right. 2 times we called ATT and they credited us for the charges, the other time it was a very small amount and we did not bother to call them.

on their web site it show that the prepaid and the starter (19.99) plan have roaming charge of .69 cents a minute.
The Local Digital Advantage plan at $29.99 does not have the roaming charge for the Imperial County area.
Is that right?

AT&T $29.99 plan with no roaming in Imperial Valley is correct. We used to use CB and hand held radios but the phone works way better. Except when you're the only one out there and you run out of gas going to the mail box!!! :x

My AT&T works the best at Glamis, and I use an aftermarket booster antenna.

Both AT&T and my NEXTEL work at DUMONT if you're near the main entrance, or use the booster antenna.

My 12" booster antenna has a 12 ft wire leed, so it sits atop my RV.
Daughter connects laptop to it and cruises the net with my unlimited minutes.

The real issue usually is what phone you're using. Some work great, some suck.

The Motorola 700 is supreme.

Problem with Nextel is they have NO roaming agreements with anyone. So, if they don't have their own tower closeby, you get no service except maybe 911.

The new Samsung color with the built in camera is suppose to be good too.

I don't get it, I use Verizon and get out every time. Of course that is on the West side of the dunes. East side I have no idea. I travel through out So Cal and Arizona for work frequently, and have tried every service in the last 10 years, Verizon has been the best by far. Nextel has been the worse, but they seem to be getting better coverage as of late.
