Monster Ride 2008

Post by Woodglue »

Monster Ride 2008!
A fun filled day of paddle-spinnin', lunch havin' and sight-seein', for anyone who's up for a fast ride in Glamis. Bring your rail, your quad, your MC or your SideXSide.

When:
Monday, Dec 29, 2008 nearly all day.
Meet on Wash Road, at Wash 20 at 9:00am.
Tell Momma you'll be gone until about sunset.

Where:
Leaving Wash20 by 9:15am, we'll plan to ride the North Dunes.

How:
South Duners either ride up or trailer up to North Dunes. Meet at Wash 20. South Duners who tow, can leave their trucks and trailers in my camp at Wash 24.9.

Lunch:
North Duners [i.e. alyshka & Woodglue] will host lunch in Washroad's Camp at Wash 23-ish.
Our morning ride will end at this camp. After lunch, we can refuel and hit the dunes again for another ride. Prearrange having your fuel at either Washroad's camp or Woodglue's camp for this.

The Ride:
the_fog can't make it for this ride, so no Clay-Rides this year! Nope, instead we have the likes of a alyshka led Raptor ride. His style, is clean and fast swooping & surfing. While fast, those on the 250R's [like me] can get an extra 2 miles per gallon when following alyshka [as opposed to the_fog].
We plan to hit all the tourist spots while in pursuit of the cleanest dunes between them. Flagpole, China Wall, Brawley Slide, Oldsmobile Hill, Competition Hill [so that we can go see some really tore up dunes] and we'll throw in a rest stop at one of the Milk Vetch Bowls that we visit a lot. <--- That'll open your eyes!

Not to be too formal, but...Safety First:
Wear the appropriate gear. Bring drinking water.
Stay in line, passing at speed is dangerous & discouraged.
Riding in a line, each rider is responsible for the rider behind them. If he/she stops, you stop too.
If we approach other riding groups, let them know how many people are behind you by holding up that many fingers. Riders with more than 5 behind them, hold 5 fingers.

It's sure to be a fun day.... So, who's game?

Game-On List:
Woodglue
alyshka
GlamisSandDuner [G&D]
Dunepilot [per PM]
Gelwell
dunerookie
dune rooster
SloppyDuner (Den Father)

High Centered List:
Glamisbound
mr. bill,
alex,
kevin,
darrell,
Sandcock

This ride will likely be on the Saturday after Christmas.

Last year, and the year before, a group of us met up in the North Dunes and rode down to Gordon Wells... met up with southduners for lunch and a ride before heading back up the hill.

This year, how would you like to make up the ride? I wouldn't mind to await southduners arriving in one of the Glamis camps and we serve up some lunch and go out on a ride before the guests head down the hill.

Let's discuss....

Well you can call us southduners in. Although I dont know how much longer we will be called south duners. We may have to alter our dune strategy this year. We may be heading more to Ogilby or Glamis. I need to discuss with our group over the off season. But we all had a blast last year the interest was there to do it again this year. And we will be out after Xmas.

Oh yes! I will be there. Been spending the summer playing with more "go fast" goodies for my Turbo Drak. 8) This time I won't be losing the driven clutch bushing as I've junked that POS clutch the car came with.

Can't hardly wait!

Can the south duners arrange a chase-truck?

Depending what kind of gas you all need, we might be able to gas up from my cans on a payin basis.
You mixers would just have to bring your own oil. I could arrange to have a bunch of 91 octane ready for you all.

I'd just go back into Brawley and fill up my empty cans after the Monster Ride.

Thoughts?

We'll figure something out Mike. I guess it all depends on where the ride is going in the first place. Not to mention we may just end up out there for a Glamis trip.

At present, I think the 'Ride' will be a long jaunt around Glamis.
If you guys are in the south dunes, then for you it would be a longer ride.
If you guys are in Glamis, then I'd still like to throw a group lunch in there somewhere... even if we just go to the vendors.

When you say a long jaunt around Glamis, where are you thinking? With the closure, the Glamis riding area couldn't be an all day ride. Is it?

As far as lunch is concerned I think we could make someones camp for a barbeque. I really dont relish paying $10 bucks for a $1 burger. But then again maybe we can work out a route that puts us at a camp for the 'que.

You're right,at our pace, we can see most of glamis in just a few hours.
To worsen matters, at this time of the year [the Saturday after christmas], the Northern most part of glamis [i.e. draw a line from Wash10 East to Gecko Rd. That area up to Hwy78] will be pretty junked up.
This is where our 'Winter Dune Sets' come into play.
China Wall, Lizard Hill, Flagpole, Brawley Slide, etc.

Game on for a BBQ!
:-k All we need is a host camp... all the North Dune folks can chip in the foods.

Honestly, and I haven't said anything here yet, but my entire desert season is up in the air  I'm really not sure how many trips I'll be able to pull off. I do know one thing, it won't be as many as years past. The fact is is that this economy has had a significant impact on our family income, which will be down about 40% this year. Food and electricity are in the budget but $500 barrels of race fuel are not :(

No good Loren. :(

If I recall, you do have a motorcycle, right?
How about any quads?

Not saying that getting to the desert will be any cheaper, but staying there might be.
And besides, those big Subie Rails are over-rated, right?

Thanks buddy. The bike is a definite option this year. The problem with that is that my kids are still too young to be left at camp by themselves and I can't ride 4 people on a bike so I'm kind of screwed.

And to think I was sooooooo excited about the economy weeding out people...I never thought it would be me.

Would this be ok with everyone?

Something else, talking about it in the dunes last weekend. A Monster Ride up to Mammoth Wash might be cool, but we would probably destroy our paddles on the road up there [a lot like a less-traveled Wash Rd].

I'd definitely be out for that. There is still a small chance I can make the Saturday ride. But plan without much consideration to me because I'm still too tenative :| .

Not really but we just got back from Ogilby this weekend which was epic so we may end up there again. But we will probably discuss as a group over thxgiving if we want to make it to G or stay in the south.

It doesnt really matter which day although I may be coming out that Saturday. So monday is Ok, even sunday could work. We are going to be out until new years day.

If we go to Mammoth wash we could still do it with knobbies although we would probably burn more gas in the dunes. You know we dont necessarily have to do dunes. We could do a non-whoop dirt ride to Tumco, Gold rock, and Indian wash. The dirt area east of the dunes has some pretty good dirt riding because no one really uses it so it doesnt get all whoop out.

I guess you can say it was my idea... on Oct 28 in fact.
With christmas falling on a thursday this year, most folks won't be arriving to the dunes until Sat. Take a look at a Dec Dune Trip Schedule and you'll see this. By the time everyone arrives to the dunes and sets up camp, there's no time for a Monster Ride. So, Monday came into the mix.
Loren, I'm sorry if you're finding that this plan went together without much consideration to you. I couldn't find a date that agreed with everyone's schedule.

Regrets,
-Mike.

Loran take the day off or how about the whole week. I know I am. Come on a monster ride wouldnt be the same without the GB.

I like the easier to read layout at the top of the thread.....good job Woody =D>

Sorry to hear that both Clay and Loran can't make it this year. Hopefully that changes [-o< , if not we will be thinking about you while we are ripping around the North Dunes. I know I had to move my schedule around quite a bit this year for us to make it out for this ride.

Regrets,
-Mike.
No worries Mike, I was just given you a hard time. I had already said I was tenative even for Saturday or Sunday so I know you got to do whats best of the crew. There is a small itsy bitsy chance I'll make it...

Thanks for the support guys.

:-k Soooo Should I consider going on this ride OR should I kick it back at camp with my cell phone waiting just in case somebody needs a truck ORRRR Should I plan in taking fuel out to Road Runner? OR should we leave a bunch of fuel at Dune Pilots camo (On Road Runner)? :-k

No doubt I will be the "slowest" one on this ride. As of Thanksgiving, the distance and slow pace, between Olds and Wash 23, without a break was a bit farther than I was comfortable with.. Its not so much the speed I'm concered about, it's the rate of speed for long durations. :?

Jon, if you're game-on for the pace and duration of a Robert led ride [i.e. probably a little faster than the dark-time Summer Night Rides], then you should jump on it.

If you're not game-on for that, you should consider an alternative.

It's your call.

I haven't been on a Robert led ride, is he a jumper like Fog? If so I will be in trouble I dont do jumps very far. Personally I like nice safe, fast where fast and slow where slow, nice transitions and nice virgin sand. I think the virgin sand is a stretch for G. though

Gene,
A Robert-Ride is a good fun one, just like a Clay-Ride.
Now, that said, they are different from one another in many many ways. True, they both like to land on their heads after a trip over the bars, but they really are different.

Remember this:
Woodglue wrote: The Ride:
the_fog can't make it for this ride, so no Clay-Rides this year! Nope, instead we have the likes of a alyshka led Raptor ride. His style, is clean and fast swooping & surfing. While fast, those on the 250R's [like me] can get an extra 2 miles per gallon when following alyshka [as opposed to the_fog].
Aside from that, I can tell you that a Robert Ride is very similar to a Gene Ride!

Robert leads a good ride. But Robert can go and go and go. At this point I think I'll opt for a gail ride that day. But can I still get in on the bbq? :-s

I know everyone is dealing with the last minute Christmas rush, but we do need to figure out who is bringing what for the barbeque. I was thinking of getting a pack of Hebrew Nationals and some burgers from Costco....... any ideas / or objections?
