News Reporter Seeks Your Thanksgiving Family in Glamis!

Post by Woodglue »

A News Reporter has contacted the ASA seeking to spend some time on Thanksgiving Day with a Family Group, in the dunes.

An ideal camp would be the one with Family from all over, coming together on Thanksgiving Day for the big Turkey Dinner, IN THE DUNES, California Style!

The reporter is very interested in doing a positive article on the sand dunes for his News Paper, and is searching for a family from Orange County, California that he can work with. He wants to do a family-based article, and is hoping to hook up with one that owns a Jeep. He wants to use them as a slant for the off-roading story to appeal to the people that think off-roading = Jeeps.

That said, I would like to hear from similar such families with Sandrails too [In the event that a OC Jeep Owner doesn't surface here].

If you fit the bill, and are interested please holler up here, contact me via PM or e-mail.

Thanks,
-Mike.

Darrin does that mean this reporter is coming out with you? Or they simply said thanks but no thanks?

If anything changes, our group of for Thanksgiving will be at least 60+ people coming from as far as Oregon then all over Southern California (I think the only county we'll be missing will be OC...lol). We do a potluck style feast with EZups, rope lights, chafing dishes, buried turkeys/roasts, etc, etc. Our camp has every style jeep (from old flattys to new Rubicons) then everything in between (minus buggies).
Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.

BLM kicks up a sandstorm by cutting off dune riders
Nature The closure is temporary pending a study, but lawsuits are in the air.

September 4, 2001 Byline:NANCY LUNA

Some mothers hand down the family jewels -- lockets, pearls, diamond rings -- to their daughters when the time is right.
Not Michelle Zumstein.
When her daughter, Amber, turned 10, she decided it was time to hand the preteen a dune-busting three-wheeler -- the same one she had as a girl.
``She thought it was corny, but I told her that's what I used to learn to ride,'' said the longtime Stanton ``duner'' and member of the American Sand Association.
But Zumstein, 32, is worried that her daughter's dune-riding experience won't be the same as hers as duners head into the fall riding season at the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, 30 miles east of El Centro. Almost 50,000 acres of prime riding territory has been shut down to protect wildlife.
``People are extremely bummed about this,'' said Zumstein, who has tackled the ar ea's 400-foot dunes all her life.
Caught in the middle of this battle is the Bureau of Land Management, the federal agency that authorized the closure after a coalition of environmental groups sued.
BLM officials declined to comment on the precarious legal situation, with both duners and environmentalists having sued -- both charging that the agency has mismanaged the dunes.
Roxie Trost, a resource specialist at the agency's El Centro office, stressed that the closures are temporary and that boundaries could change once a desert-conservation plan is completed next year.
But off-roaders said the only way to reopen the dunes, affectionately called ``Glamis'' by their most loyal riders, is to go to court.
``This whole thing has gotten way out of hand,'' said Doug Dixon, editor of Costa Mesa-based Sand Sports magazine and an avid duner. ``Everywhere you turn, there's another closure.''
Pismo Beach and spots in Nevada and Utah are the only other places in the region that offer massive dunes for off-highway vehicles -- making the Glamis fight even more important, say ASA members.
``Still, none of those dunes compare to Glamis,'' said Vicki Warren, an ASA spokeswoman. Legal hearings on the closure begin this month. The association's lawsuit says the BLM put the cart before the horse by closing the dunes before proving that off-road vehicles damage the wildlife, including the Peirson's milk-vetch.
The purple perennial is the cornerstone of the Glamis battle. While duners say the plant is flourishing, environmentalists say the treacherous runs made by off-roaders threaten dozens of desert species.
``The dunes deserve to be better-managed than as simply a large off-road sandbox,'' said Daniel Patterson, a desert ecologist with the Center for Biological Diversity.
The Tucson-based organization, along with the Sierra Club and Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, sued the BLM last year, charging that it was violating federal environmental laws by allowing excessive off-roading without studying the consequences to the ecosystem.
The 49,000-acre closure resulted from a settlement between the agency and the environmentalists. It will remain in effect until the desert-conservation plan is completed.
The duners' attorney, David Hubbard, said the agency had no data to warrant the closure, and cited a 1998 BLM report that shows plant life thriving in the desert.
Six plants were found to be ``as abundant and widespread in the entire dune system as they were in 1977,'' including in the riding areas, the report stated.
``Their own report says there's no impact,'' said Hubbard.
But Patterson said the report is flawed because it compares a drought year, 1977, to 1998 -- a year when heavy El Nino storms drenched the region, causing plant life to flourish.
Environmentalists say the sand association is only making matters worse by suing.
If the sand group prevails in its suit, ``then they will force a situation where we would go back to federal court to request to close the entire dunes,'' said Patterson.
Duners like Zumstein and Dixon aren't going to budge.
They say they're fighting for family traditions and to reopen a wilderness of fun and serenity shut down to spite a culture of people mislabeled as beer-swilling rowdies who don't appreciate nature.
``It's something that I love, and growing up this is all the vacations I took,'' said Dixon, 31, of Buena Park.
It's not uncommon for up to 200,000 rabid riders to besiege the dunes during the busiest fall and winter weekends.
Many worry that more accidents will occur as thousands of duners clog a smaller area.
``That's nuts. That makes no sense whatsoever,'' said Jeff Ruch, executive director of the environmentalist-employees group. ``Safety has nothing to do with the number of acres available -- it's how they use it.''
For many, Glamis is the Mount Everest of dunes.
The picturesque dune system, with its famous trails, bowls and ridges, draws an estimated 1.2 million visitors during the October-May riding season. Some come from thousands of miles away.
``The Glamis dunes are truly the best I have ever visited,'' said Norman Blackman, who travels 1,500 miles from his southeast Texas home to ride at the Glamis dunes each year.
Warren, the sand association spokeswoman, said she is a Glamis convert.
``I used to think, `miles and miles of sand, who would want it?' '' said the Irvine legal assistant.
But tired of being left alone while her husband and two sons spent weekends at the dunes, she finally decided to check out the Glamis phenomenon.
``I was hooked. The sheer majesty of Glamis gets into the heart, the mind, the blood,'' said Warren.
And that's what will keep duners fighting.
’`We're not going to give up because this is our passion. This is what we do,'' said Dixon.

Yes I remember cause it had our picture on it as well, I have a copy it stored away. The reporter is going to try and get me a couple more to hang on to.. We got a lot of calls from people who don't even ride, that they saw us in the paper. LOL It was fun to do it and cannot wait to do it again, just glad we were given the chance to do it then and again now.

Michelle based upon what I read from the first article I have no doubt you and your family/group will say all the right things about what we are all about. This was the whole idea in getting some positive press. Good luck and hope to see yall out in the dunes some time.

Yes we will all say the right things and make sure that this is a positive thing. We need it just not for the dunes, but for all riding areas. We cannot afford to loose any more areas, we have lost too much already. That is one of the whole reason for doing this is to help save our riding areas.

I cannot wait to see it once he is done writing it up.

Well I hate to even sit here and repost the email I just received, but I thought you all should know that the story is not going to happen right now. Hopefully it will still happen later on down the line, but as for now its on the back burner.
Here is the email for all to read:

Michelle,

I've been told we can't do the Glamis story this year for Thanksgiving. As
much as the editors love the idea, our photo staff has literally been
burned out by the fires. As much as I've tried to get someone to do it,
they can't free up a photographer and even my time has been eaten up by the
fire coverage. We're all pretty fried over here...with the impact of the
recent layoffs, things like these fires eat through the staff pretty hard.

I can't tell you how much I regret not being able to cover the story but i
have to accept their decision. I do, however, want to stay engaged with
your community on the dunes issues and easily ramp up during a future
holiday, or even weekend, to head out there and write the story we're
talking about.

Please stay in touch. I'll give you a call as well on your cell.

Thanks again for all your help.

Well, at least we have a good friend in the Media.

I hope he attempts it again... Perhaps new years? I know he was looking for a family trip, and nothing else compares to Thanksgiving.

Kind of a bummer.

Yeah I was wondering how this was going to turn out I guess we know but the very least we have someone interested.
