Monster Ride 2009!

Post by Woodglue »

Monster Ride 2009!
Once a year, we get together for a day-long dune ride. This will be our 4th annual event of such, occurring between Christmas and New Years. Much like a summer time night ride, but this will be a fun filled day-time ride of paddle-spinnin', lunch havin' and sight-seein', for anyone who's up for a fast ride in Glamis. Bring your rail, your quad, your MC or your SideXSide.

When:
Thursday, Dec 31, 2009 nearly all day.
Meet on Wash Road, at Wash 20 at 9:00am.
Tell your camp you'll be gone until about sunset.

Where:
Leaving Wash20 by 9:15am, we'll plan to ride the North Dunes.

How:
South Duners either ride up or trailer up to North Dunes. Meet at Wash 20. South Duners who tow, can leave their trucks and trailers in my camp at Wash 24.9.

Lunch:
Our morning ride will end at Woodglue's Wash 24 camp. On the menu is Pizza (from Momma Jeanies) and soda. To cover costs (estimated $150.00), it would be no more than $7.50 per person, final cost will be advised.
After lunch, we can refuel and hit the dunes again for another ride.

Refueling:
To avoid that you have to run to your camp and refuel (unless you're camped close by), please prearrange to have your gas cans Woodglue's Wash24 camp the night before the ride. Any cans will be locked up over night. This will prevent the added time of waiting for someone to run to their camp to refuel.

The Ride:
A clean and fast swooping & surfing ride. We plan to hit all the tourist spots while in pursuit of the cleanest dunes between them. Flagpole, China Wall, Brawley Slide, Oldsmobile Hill, Competition Hill [so that we can go see some really tore up dunes] and we'll throw in a rest stop at one of the Milk Vetch Bowls that we visit a lot. <--- That'll open your eyes!

Not to be too formal, but...Safety First:
 Whip and Safety Flag required on all OHV’s.
 Wear the appropriate Riding Gear, BackPack with tools, GPS, Cell Phone, Water and Goggles to name a few.
 Know the law about drinking and duning.
 Stay in line, passing at speed puts others in danger.
 Each rider is responsible for the rider behind them. If he/she stops, you stop too.
 If we approach other riding groups, give a show of fingers to indicate how many riders are behind you.

It's sure to be a fun day.... So, who's game?

Game-On List:
Woodglue with Jason, Jeff, Peter & Alias
GlamisSandDuner & Dione
Gelwell (riding Clean-up duty)
Dunerookie
dunerooster
Dunepilot
the_fog with Kevin, Chris & Jake
Kubo & Buddies
Glamisbound & Buddies
Canuck & buddies
alyshka + 1
Sandcock
Rob.G

High Centered List:
RAPTOR700RIDER & Buddies
GrumpyWookiee
DennisAKAWalter

Oh, and, bring your camera. Last year's ride had 18 people. We looked pretty awesome streaming down olds in a continuous line for about 90 seconds. Click the underlined for reports and pictures from Last Year's Monster Ride

You know us southduners will be there: Gelwell, Dunerookie and dunerooster fo' sure. We've participated on this ride the last 3 years and we had a blast. We are beat afterwards but well worth it. We will probably trailer up like last year. I would love to see more riders this year, love those long rider trains. I think we had about 25 riders last year didn't we Mike?

Close... we had 18. If I do say so myself, we were a pretty impressive string headed down Olds from the top. Over a minute of one after another. It was pretty cool!

Very cool!
Would anyone like to discuss the tentative ride plan, or is it ok with everyone?

We need to resolve what we'd like to do for lunch too. One of the easiest things would be Pizza. We could arrange for a truck to meet us down there with our gas cans.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I know I have been able to "help" on all the other runs. Given whats going on with moving... no one our end knows when it'll happen still tossing offers back and forth, but I know once a number is agreed on will have like 90 days or so to find a place and move out. (so thats whats going on so everyone knows now.)

But as I started to say. I can not confirm being anywhere till this happens. Sorry. You know how much I dig it. It bums me out not being able to jump in and offer up.

George you and Dionne did a great job. I know it was a lot of work. Personally I could go either way. Where is this pizza place anyway? I would think pizza would be easy since someone else gets to do the work and clean up the mess. That way we all get to sit down relax and get to socialize with everyone. But the burger thing will work too.

Thanks Gene, it would be nice just to kick back and enjoy lunch, but I have no idea where a pizza place is that would deliver, other than getting pizza at the restraunt above the store. :-k

George, you can actually make a deal with the ice cream guys too. Some of them will order the pizza and deliver it for a little premium. Or we could just have Brian drive into town and pick it up for us since he is selling his quads  He can be our camp biotch

You guys are getting spoiled!!! What would our duning forefathers think of pizza delivered to the dunes? What is this Fast Times At Ridgmont High mentality. Is it duning time or city life time? Have an apple and a burger. At most I would say get like the ice cream place to serve up some of their bbq (smoked) chicken or ribs. That suff is Goooood!! If I'm in Glamis I'd meet you guys there for that.

Or you can see if Red Lobster will cater something. You guys really are getting spoiled. I had to make fun of you. Don't take it all personal and stuff.

You know hippy don't cook. I wouldn't want me touching my food, not to mention other peoples food. You guys are gonna stick that stuff in your mouth, and I'm not even sure where my hands have been. :-$ Besides I make a much better moocher than cook anyways. [-o<

Lets talk about where this ride is going, NOT what food to eat where. Its not "the monster meal", or "The other side of the grill".

Wow!

Lotsa posting, but we still don't have a plan.

George, it was an awesome lunch last year... but it's a lot of work for the few people. Especially when you just want to FLOP and REST between rides!! Same thing with the South Duners hosting our lunch on the 2007 Monster Ride. Good food, but a lotta work.
In 2006, we just ate at one of the vendors down in the South Dunes. I like that idea for this year.

How about this?
1) We ride around the North Dunes, hitting the all tourist spots kind of like last year.
2) We'll meet Jon at Mama Jeannies Pizza [it's upstairs from the Glamis Beach Store, right next to the bar] and we'll order up some pizza for lunch. We can ALL be social, even sit in the Air Conditioning! Jon can have all of our gas cans in his truck [I'll furnish the cable and a couple padlocks to make sure it stays there while parked outside the GBS].
3) If Jon can't make it, we'll try to find another person as generous to take his place in the 'chase truck'.

Loren, I've added you to the 'High-Centered' list. Make it happen dude!

The more the merrier, but I'm learning with these group rides that there can be such a thing as too much. =;
I think your right  ..... #-o I forget that all of the big group rides aren't like the last night ride we did where everyone was able to keep up and not break down. I guess I am just getting spoiled being able to be a part of something so great and not remembering what a cluster ---- that having a big group can be. Thanks to all that keep that big train chuggin smooth =D> =D> =D> =D> and by all means [-o< keep spoiling me

Mike, sorry I didn't see this post, but we would like to be able to return to camp to let the Corgis out of the trailer for the halftime of the monster ride. Pizza sounds great, but it would be even better if we could have them at our camp instead, that way we wouldn't have worry about locking up the bikes or having gas delivered. We could look into going there the day before and putting in a pre order and prepaying for them to be ready for pick up at a certain time. How does this sound :?:

Thats not a bad idea plus we all can contribute money based upon the number of riders divided equally

George, I'm on board with your idea.
On one of the trips before december maybe you or I can go in and talk to them about a pre-order for pick-up by the chase-truck.
For now, we'll call it The Plan... that is unless something better comes along.

HSSC, it really is an awesome time! Good riding, good people, and good food! You can't hardly go wrong! I wish you could be there but I wont buy your gas. [-(

If we end up being out to Glamis for the week of Thanksgiving, I will talk to Mama Jeanne's when we get there to find out the prices and how it would all work  . Plus with WENDTOFFROAD being a vendor down there now, hopefully he can hook us up with a 8) ice cream truck vendor that could pick it up and bring it to us for $20 [-o< . Then we would be able to by nice cool refreshing frozen treats at the same time \:D/ . How does that sound :?:

She dosen't burn gas, she burns the other stuff and right now it is cheaper.

Again sounds like a very good social gathering. But, when the time comes for the Glamis trip I'll be looking for a low people count and hope for the wind. 8)

HSSC you gotta come out it's a blast. Most of us come out for the week after Xmas and before new years. Its only a 8 hour trip for you and if you stay the week it will make the gas expense a little easier to take.

 Robert (alyshka) used to take something like 15 - 2 night trips to Glamis each season.
Gas Prices went up and he reduced the number of trips, but increased the duration. Net result, he end up with more nights in the dunes while spending less on trip gas.

Imagine how much you'd save if you drove out there in October and went home in April!

Not sure the black water tank could last even that long.

I know my daughter would love a trip down there with her, new to her Z-400. Running them dunes for me has been a real long time indeed. If the 49,000 acres were to open by chance that would be worth putting a trip on the old Visa. =D>

Good grades made this happen when she turned 13 back in June of 09. =D>

Its 650 miles for me. Maybe I could do it in 11 hours. But someone would have to guarantee smooth sand or my money back. 8)

I've pulled a 24-foot trailer with a 65 El Camino one year and a 55 Cameo Carrier on another to Reno via Hwy 395 and 6 to 80. Hot August Nights you know 8) It was 11-12 hours of driving no matter how you sliced it  I did that all for a very cool four day weekend. Come on Bro, do the dunes with the group =D>

This is why the wife and I usually only go out for 3 day minimum trips. The longer the trip the better in my opinion. I can't wait for the thanksgiving trip.... 10 days of sand between my toes....... and then there is the Xmas / New Years trip where we will be out for only 9 days  ....... I guess I will have to figure out a way to deal with only being out there for 9 days on that one    YEE HAH ...... can't wait \:D/ \:D/ \:D/
