I've updated the plan (at the top of this thread) with the only thing yet to be resolved being lunch plans.

Oh found a sore spot huh? Now I got two reasons to cut the hair. I'm tell'n ya'll itll happen this season. Maybe after my first buggy run.

Without reading that link...

10 inches of clean dry hair with nothing on it, braded in a bag and mailed in. I was brushing through it this weekend and had a moster knot grabbed the siccors and took out a clump. Feels a lot better, but it made me sad seeing 800 times as much hair as Brian has on his head in my trash can. Couldn't notice it missing though. My daughter was home saw it in the trash can and came looking for me. Couldn't even tell I lost any.

We GOTTA get my hair its own thread so people can link to it when they want to mess with me about it instead of it poping up in thread after thread.

You know George I would much rather wait an hour for you and Dion and have the trplets on a trip than you guys being ready to go on a ride.

I can't wait for this ride!!
I'm going to take the new dirtbikes out this trip and bring along my cousin this time. Its his first time to the dunes and close to his first time on a dirtbike... so hopefully he learns how to ride quickly :!: He does full downhill mountain biking so it should be an easy transition.
But as for the ride itself, I think I can do about 2 - 2 1/2 straight hours of riding before the tank is done (CR250 & YZ250, 2 stroke). As long as there is a pit stop of some sort along the way within that time we should be good. If not then we'll have to cut it short.

I thought I was going to get a trailer to sleep in for this trip... still planning on it but theres a chance I might end up freezing in the tent again :( Lets hope it works out :!:

Glamisbound & kubo, good to see you joining the ranks of ‘Game-On’!
Glamisbound, will you be in your rail or on a bike?
Kubo, you will have some time to get your Mountain Bike buddy familiar with the dunes before the Monster Ride. Keep an eye on his progress and you can make the call if you want him to join the ride with us.

Also, Canuck (i.e. Thom... i.e. one of the new wash road volunteers) sent me a PM with interest in the ride. He has 3 or 4 that will join us.

Grumpy, you’re on the high-centered list, please keep us posted on how your plans progress.
I also still have RAPTOR700RIDER on the high-centered list.
On Aug26, RAPTOR700RIDER wrote:maybe me and some buddies will join the monster ride.
What’s the plan Stan?

There are 10 on the confirmed list, but with most people bringing one, two or 5 buddies, we’re looking at group of 20 or 25 riders… as of today! I expect this will grow before the end of next week.
This will be very cool! 8) However, with this many in a group, I do want to stress a few points in fairness to all:
1) Mechanical stability!
2) Rider Ability!
3) Fuel Management!
Can your-ride do the-ride without a mechanical issue? As I’ve posted before, the unforeseen engine blow is one thing, but things like throwing a chain or leaking fuel are usually preventable. Well maintained rides only!
Can the rider keep pace with the group? Because of the size of the group, we will likely not be at our fastest… but we will still keep a good clip. Riders should be well versed in duning at fast pace (navigating witches-eyes, up slip faces, transitioning over razor backs, etc). On other rides organized in this forum, we have a group that is faster than the slow one and another group that is slower than the fast one. We are doing this for the Monster Ride.
Can your fuel go the distance? We plan to stop for lunch and refuel at roughly noon. Bring enough fuel to make it that far. My 250R 2-stroke has a desert tank but I’m still bringing a 1.5 gallon can too.

If there is an issue with one of the riders, that rider will not get left behind. With each rider responsible for the one behind them, the group will eventually stop (albeit, spread across a mile of dune-peaks). Partner up with someone. If a rider is broken, low on gas, or just not keeping up… notify the clean-up person (the rider at the tail-end of the line) and split off from the group. Don’t split off alone or without notifying the clean-up.

Who wants to ride the clean-up position? We need a dedicated person.

Lunch:
I propose this…
I will offer lunch in my Wash 24 camp at 11:30am on Dec31. This would include about 3 or 4 slices of pizza and one or two soda’s per person. The Pizza will come from Momma Jeannies via 2500HD Chevy. To cover costs (estimated $150.00), it would be no more than $7.50 per person, final cost will be advised.
RSVP’s are needed for the correct pizza order.
Please let me know if there's a problem with this. If not, we have a plan.

Refueling:
With lunch in my camp, it would be best to have your gas cans in my camp the night before the ride. I will lock up any cans over night. This will prevent the added time of waiting for someone to run to their camp to refuel.

So, do we have a plan??
This is going to be a ride for the record books!

Mike I have no problem pulling clean up. I'll bring the warrior for that duty. Of course being the only 3 wheeler in the crowd is fun too.

We werte kicking around the idea of eating lunch at the vendors, but that would mean everyone heading either back to camp or to a central camp to refuel. This is why we thought it would be better to have the food in the same camp as the fuel.

For being the most attentive guy in the dunes (i.e. he's out there more than any of us), he's not very attentive on the bbs! Robert, you know... if you don't get your reservations in, you're going to get out there and have no place to camp!!

Re: Monster Ride 2009!

Post by Woodglue »

I've posted the latest and greatest plan at the top of the thread as follows:
When:
Thursday, Dec 31, 2009 nearly all day.
Meet on Wash Road, at Wash 20 at 9:00am.
Tell your camp you'll be gone until about sunset.

Where:
Leaving Wash20 by 9:15am, we'll plan to ride the North Dunes.

How:
South Duners either ride up or trailer up to North Dunes. Meet at Wash 20. South Duners who tow, can leave their trucks and trailers in my camp at Wash 24.9.

Lunch:
Our morning ride will end at Woodglue's Wash 24 camp. On the menu is Pizza (from Momma Jeanies) and soda. To cover costs (estimated $150.00), it would be no more than $7.50 per person, final cost will be advised.
After lunch, we can refuel and hit the dunes again for another ride.

Refueling:
To avoid that you have to run to your camp and refuel (unless you're camped close by), please Prearrange to have your gas cans Woodglue's Wash24 camp the night before the ride. Any cans will be locked up over night. This will prevent the added time of waiting for someone to run to their camp to refuel.

The Ride:
A clean and fast swooping & surfing ride. We plan to hit all the tourist spots while in pursuit of the cleanest dunes between them. Flagpole, China Wall, Brawley Slide, Oldsmobile Hill, Competition Hill [so that we can go see some really tore up dunes] and we'll throw in a rest stop at one of the Milk Vetch Bowls that we visit a lot. <--- That'll open your eyes!

Not to be too formal, but...Safety First:
 Whip and Safety Flag required on all OHV’s.
 Wear the appropriate Riding Gear, BackPack with tools, GPS, Cell Phone, Water and Goggles to name a few.
 Know the law about drinking and duning.
 Stay in line, passing at speed puts others in danger.
 Each rider is responsible for the rider behind them. If he/she stops, you stop too.
 If we approach other riding groups, give a show of fingers to indicate how many riders are behind you.
Also, as he posted in another thread, Sandcock is added to the Game On list! =D>

Hey... I would love to go on this ride. I'll be making camp somewhere around Wash 24-25 on Weds the 30th, probably by 9 AM if not sooner.

I'm an experienced dune rider, and I'll be riding my 2008 Outlaw 525. I'm happy to contribute to the lunch fund too.

Thanks!

I'm all loaded up and ready to head out tomorrow morning. Should be there early-mid afternoon, depending on traffic.

Found it! I rolled in today around 3 PM. I'm parked with Robert and some of the others... from what I'm told, right next to your camp. Will make lunch and gas tomorrow during the Big Ride much simpler. :)

Wow, this place is freakin' HUGE!! We went for a ride out to China Wall and back... from looking at my GPS trackog, we only touched a very minuscule part of the area!

I just got back from 5 days in Glamis and the 2009 Monster Ride. This was by far the biggest group for the Monster Ride...and another great group of people for sure. I think we did close to 40 miles per my GPS. I'll let George, Mike, and other leaders fill in more when they get back but I will say it was a BLAST!! And a big thanks goes out to Mike for organizing it again and his wife Becky for taking the time to make lunch happen =D>

As a side note, the weather was awesome, NY's eve was awesome, the entire trip was awesome!! ****, I want to go back already.

good ride lots o' fun. Riding clean up was a challenge at times but we all managed. Good pace. You know when other riders stop and let a big group like this get thru shows some duner respect. Thanks to Becky for picking up the good eats.

Yup, that sure was cool how all other groups stopped for us as we crossed paths. At times are group was spread out over three dunes...awesome.

Props to Gene, Clay, Mike, and others, for helping keep the group together...which is no small job with 40 duners.

Actually, there were 32 of us in a total of 29 vehicles. =D>
George or Robert can give the specific numbers, but the morning ride was something like 45 miles and the afternoon ride was some 20 miles. I specifically know, that I made it back to camp after the morning ride on FUMES!
And the avg moving speed was well in the 20mph range.... that's a pretty good clip.
All of us were on the morning ride, but after lunch the afternoon ride was more like a camp-ride. It took us so long to get going again, that by the time we did it was just me, Robert, George and Rob.G.

I will pass all your thanks on to Becky.
The pizza deal worked out ok, but I don't recommend that we do it again next year. It was difficult to coordinate delivery as Momma Jeanies Pizza would not let us order it without being there in person, and even after it was ordered (in person), they would not tell Becky how long it would take. On top of that, a good handful of people on the morning ride didn't show up for lunch, so we ended up with 3 extra pizza's and a lot less money.

A couple of us were talking about the 2010 Monster Ride being to and around the south dunes. That's how this ride was originated in 2006, but for the past two years we've kept it in Glamis. Game on for the South Dunes next year? We would ride down in the morning, ride around and have lunch, then ride back in the afternoon.

Thanks to all that came out for the ride and a big thanks to Mrs Woodglue for taking care of lunch =D> . I hope that I picked some good lines for the ride with a good pace. I know that I had a blast and look forward to the 2010 monster ride. I hope you guys enjoyed it as much as I did, it's hard to pick lines and a speed that accommodates everyone and every vehicle with the 34 vehicles that I counted. Thanks again to Gene playing cleanup. I still can't believe that you ran out of gas on a Warrior

I know I was a little shocked myself, but I probabaly did more turning around instead of staying in the line. Plus I really had my thumb in it.
