Monster Ride 2010!

Post by GlamisSandDuner »

Monster Ride 2010! South Duner Style
Once a year, we get together for a day-long dune ride. This will be our 5th annual event of such, occurring between Christmas and New Years. Much like a summer time night ride, but this will be a fun filled day-time ride of paddle-spinnin', lunch havin' and sight-seein', for anyone who's up for a fast ride in Gordons Well and in Obilby. Bring your rail, your quad, your MC or your SideXSide.

When:
Thursday, Dec 30, 2010 nearly all day.
North Duners, meet at the Flag Pole by 9am, we will rendezvous with the South Duners at 10am on the sand highway where it tees into the road to the entrance of Patton’s Valley. Tell your camp you'll be gone until late afternoon.

Where:
Leaving Flag Pole by 9:15am, we'll plan to ride the Sand Highway down to the entrance of Payton’s Valley. We will then meet up with gelwell and he will show us how to do the Gordon’s Well dunes the right way

How:
North Duners either ride down or trailer down to the South Dunes. Meet up on the Sand Highway at the entrance to Patton’s Valley at 10am. North Duners who trailer down will have to make arrangements to leave their trucks and trailers in Ogilby where the host camp will be.

Lunch:
Our morning ride will end at gelwell’s camp in Ogilby for lunch and refueling. The gelwell and friends group is supplying lunch which consists of “Burgers and dogs, beans, and tater salad- a good ol' fashioned south dunes cookin' “. If you could bring the host a few bucks to help offset the cost, I am sure that it would be greatly appreciated, Thanks Gene. After lunch, we can refuel and hit the dunes again for another ride.

Refueling:
To avoid that you have to run to your camp and refuel (unless you're camped close by), please prearrange to have your gas cans at gelwell’s camp in Ogilby the night before the ride. This will prevent the added time of waiting for someone to run to their camp to refuel.

The Ride:
A clean and fast swooping & surfing ride. Gene will guide us through the dunes in pursuit of the cleanest smoothest dunes that he can find.
Not to be too formal, but...Safety First:
 Whip and Safety Flag required on all OHV’s.
 Wear the appropriate Riding Gear, BackPack with tools, GPS, Cell Phone, Water and Goggles to name a few.
 Know the law about drinking and duning.
 Stay in line, passing at speed puts others in danger.
 Each rider is responsible for the rider behind them. If he/she stops, you stop too.
 If we approach other riding groups, give a show of fingers to indicate how many riders are behind you.

Oh, and, bring your camera. Last year's ride had over 30 people. We looked pretty awesome streaming through the dunes in a big continuous line.

Game On man!
I would ask everyone to KEEP AN EYE ON THE PERSON BEHIND YOU.
If you don't, we can end up with two huge groups snaking throught the dunes on two different paths. This can be caused by one person not noticing that the rider behind them is falling farther and father back, to the point the line becomes separated.

Last year we had a slower rider that got the back of the pack separated from the faster front. This happened because the person in front didn't keep and eye out for the back rider.

I'd like to be in except I have no idea how to get fuel down to where it needs to be...

And if my buddy Chuck comes down from Reno to join us, he'll be in too. Still waiting to hear if he'll make it or not.

Ok, have some questions before I sign on.

1. I can find the flag pole and lead a group there from the Washes. After that, I’m lost. Who is going to meet/be at the flag pole to lead everyone down to Patton Valley? And back?

2. How ‘fast’ is this ride(s)? My rail is an older style Hi-Jumper type with limited suspension. We aren’t a ‘jumps’, ‘whoops’ balls to the wall type group. No sense in being the slow guy(s) that make it no fun for anyone.

Let me know.

Thanks.

Lyle you will meet up with Mike (Woodglue) and George (GlamisSand Duner) at Flag Pole they will meet me down at the entrance to Patton Valley along Sand Hwy. They will probably lead you back. I would imagine the pace down wont be all that fast but wont be at a snails pace either. Sand Hwy is fairly straight between Patton and Glamis.

The dune ride I will lead will be based upon the pace of the group. Last year we had a large group and some slow riders I pulled clean up (trailer or caboose as some call it) and it was tough keeping the group together. This ride will be different since I pace based upon the skill sets of the group. We are going to have other buggies so the line will have to consider the larger track vehicles. Since I ride a 3 wheeler I dont do a lot of jumps there will be the opportunity for those who want to but that is up to the individual riders

Thanks for the feed back. I will discuss it with our group and let you know. PM me phone numbers.

If we participate, we'll supply our own burgers/dogs so you won't get stuck with buying for people who don't show.

In any event, we are heading out Monday and will be in Wash 4 through the 2nd for any that want to stop by. I'll also have internet access.

I have been watching the forcast for the ride Thursday and it looks like it is going to be overly windy. I personally don't like to ride when the wind is blowing sand off the top of the dunes. More of a safety issue for me. Just a suggesstion but any chance of doing the ride Friday or Saturday? I know conditions will change daily but I feel this needs to be discussed now to be able to get any change in plans out as early as possible. What do you think?

Gene, I can count for our camp only (Woodglue, alyshka and us) and we have a head count of 10 plus maybe 2 more maybe. Don't know about your camp or Loyd or Loren. Dunepilot sounds like a yes as well. So I would put the count at 13 plus whomever confirms after this post, not including people in your camp. Thanks again Gene.
Please send me GPS coordinates of your camp. Thanks

Re: Monster Ride 2010!

Post by GlamisSandDuner »

Better late than never..... I know it's been a few weeks since the Monster Ride but I just wanted to thank everyone that went on the ride (GlamisSandDuner, alyshka, Jason w/ Woodglue riding shotgun, Jerry, az ken dawg, Aaron, Ted, Brian, gelwell and DuneRookie), and for the rest who couldn't make it we will hopefully see you next year. Other than going past the entrance to Pattons Valley, the ride down was pretty smooth and uneventful. Nine of us met up at wash 24 and headed out to the flagpole where we waited until 9:15 and no one showed up. From there we took off down to Pattons Valley where we met up with gelwell and DuneRookie. We hit the south dunes and met the DennisAKAWalter, Leigh Ann, Dione, Lydia, Bob, Muckett and Cory down at the gelwell camp. We had a great lunch, fueled up and went to Pattons where Brian from Texas trans went out in his Banshee #-o . He was able to get back to the gelwell's camp and rode his Banshee back to wash 24 next to the wash road from Ogilby  . From there we headed back due to fuel concerns and went to China Wall from Road Runner. On about mile 67 of our journey I did my human impression of a slow motion lawn dart when my quads front tires dissappeared in the sand, but we all made it back to camp under our own power and OK. Thanks again to everyone and hopefully Gene's prediction comes true

He really did ride shotgun in the buggy. I know the last time we made this journey he blew up his 250r so I'm guessing he didn't want a repeat performance of that. I think there was also some issue with the Predator as well, so he just rode with Jason. For further information you will have to ask the source himself.

That's the story I heard about Mike. The fog had a job he was finishing up plus I heard he was sick.
