It's cool to see all this chit chat about on-board video! I too went through this decision making process a while ago, and decided on the HelmetCamera.com setup and a DV Cam. Sure there are many other bullet cameras out there, but you can get everything at HelmetCamera, and the rugged housing for the camera is great. I've had mine for over 2 years and it works awesome every time.

Check out some of the Videos I've created that are posted on my site:

http://www.tomslik.com/ (Go to the "Video" section). Of course, these are compressed MPG's, the original DV files and the DVD MPEG's are very high quality and impress everyone that watches them on TV. ("Note -- I just realized that of the 10 or so videos on my site, I've only got a couple that are actually with the HelmetCamera. I'll have to post some more!).

I am on my 2nd DV cam (they just don't seem to like sand a whole lot!). Just gotta be more disciplined to LEAVE the camera in a protective case while on rides, and quit trying to check out the latest video footage while IN the dunes! My current DV cam is the Sony HC32. It's perfect and relatively cheap and has the LANC connector. To me, this is a VERY important feature. With the HelmetCamera wired remote hooked up to the LANC connector on the Sony DV cam, you can turn the camera off and on, record and pause, all in the middle of a dune ride. This is VERY handy for recording just exactly what you want, and not wasting batteries and recording time on stuff you don't want.

I've had mine hooked up to my Raptor, my helmet, my buggy, my Jeep, mountain bike, and more. It's cool to expirament and put the camera down low near suspension (Nascar style!), or facing out the rear of your quad, etc.

I think it's these videos and photos that help bridge the gap between dune weekends! You can just sit back and watch some on-board video to really re-live the experience, and show other non-duners what it's like out there...

Tom

Fry's electronics just had them on sale last week for $299. Unfortunately, by the time I was able to get down there, they only had open-box ones left. :x :x

So Tom,
What does your set up consist of?

Helmet Cam Got Where?

Camera bought where?

Any other special stuff you have?

Getting close to buying a set up.

I only want to buy once...

Do you [any of you users] bring extra tapes and batteries on dune rides?

How long do the batteries last [in camera and other]?

How about the tape is there a special mode you use?

Thanks,

Steve

Which bullet camera system did you get?

And for anyone else who knows, is there a big difference in video quality in a 380 resolution bullet cam vs. a 480 resolution bullet cam? The difference is about $100 on bulletcam.com and I'm trying to decide if it's worth it.

Possible answer??
In terms of 380 lines vs. 480 lines or 420 lines vs. 600 lines there are issues concerning the manufacture of the CCD and this is where there are radical differences.
Not really. It is info though.

I'm not sure if this was brought up before by anyone, but you will need a firewire card/IEEE1394 card in your computer if you want to load the video onto the computer in order to edit it. My camcorder said it could do it through the USB connection and even though it did, it had many, many dropped frames. If was impossible to watch the video with all the dropped frames. The firewire card was about $30 and the cable was $25. Just an FYI for anyone looking into doing this.

So...
With what we are doing, does it make sense to go to a 560 lines?
or just stick with a 480 or even 380?

What's your opinion?

Thanks,

That's the one I got and I like it so far. Unfortunately, I haven't had a lot of time to use it yet. I also got an extra battery and separate charger here http://www.digitalfotoclub.com/sc/produ ... =964597121. With that Sony camera, the only way to charge the battery is with it attached to the camera. You can attach the power cord directly to the camera to charge it or charge it through the docking station. I rather take the battery off and charge it separately so I got this separate charger. This way you can also keep using the camera while charging the other battery.

Also, if you buy extra batteries, from what I've read they must be Sony brand. Apparently, they have some type of computer chip in them and if you try to use non-Sony brand (ie cheaper battery), the camera knows it and the may not work with that battery.

Well, I took the plunge full speed ahead.
Helmetcamera.com
and
a Sony HandyCam

So, with my new helmetcam attached to my new handycam I go to the dunes to play with a new toy.

Thanks to all that helped me.

FYI:
When I placed my order at Helmet Cams [on line], the called me back the next day on my cel phone. I thought that was pretty kewl and good service. I had ordered an extra part that was part of the "Kit" I ordered.
So they did not ship me a useless extra part.

OK...

Where do you go to have them "Hosted"?

My video shot, first one was OK, basically we were just out trying it out, Cathy was leading with RJ in between.

I rode his arse, and it seemed like I was 100' back.

So [I had bought another lens thinking this might happen, after viewing others video's on line…]

Behind the lens is a small spring, and I just plain lost the zoom lens spring [yes it is different]. I could not focus the zoom, then, I deadened the 're-chargeable' batteries, and then got mad at my self for not being a instant EXPERT! Those rechargeable go fast…

I did learn a bunch of stuff:
NEW Duracell AA recharge batts go dead pretty fast for one. I'll probably hook up a Cig lighter power source for it...
Record in 12 bit stereo so you can over dub the sound. {I did first video in 16 bit so no over dubbing]
and I also learned I know not much! [about video or audio]
The Sony HC42 NTSC is a very kewl camera, almost like a mini computer.

We'll be out this weekend, to try to get some footage.

Now... Where to upload it?
How to upload it...

Burned the 7 minutes to a CD-R no problem.

To burn to a DVD I also will need a IEEE 1394 cable...

I guess I will pick one up tomorrow.

Any one got an answer for my questions?

Thanks,

Steve

Glad to hear you're progressing Steve. I seldom manage to get video because I always seem to forget one vital battery, or charger, or cable, or....well you know :D

Output it as MPEG your software probably has some decent suggested settings which are a good comprimise of quality vs. download size. If it's small enough you can put it up on putfile http://www.putfile.com very simple to do but they have a limit on filesize.

Google video (http://video.google.com) has no size limit but needs a google account and requires a speical upload program that they give you. Plus each video has to be approved before it goes live so it can take a day from when you upload until you can share it.

There's also youtube.com but I haven't tried them. And ourmedia.org which is supported by the people from archive.org but I've never tried it either.

If your file is small enough putfile is VERY quick and easy. If not gogole and youtube are probably the best bet.

Burned a CD-R from your computer but need a 1394 to do a DVD? Is your DVD player an external or something?

Steve it does not matter what mode you record sound in 12 bit or 16 bit, To dub over it that will be the editing software that you are using, it does not care what you record in because you can set the audio level on one track and then put music on another track and so on...

my book says on page 63

"You cannot record additional audio:
when tape has been recorded in 16-bit mode (page 50)
when tape is recorded in LP mode
etc
etc
etc..."

Edit it right in camera...

So I need Edit Software?

What is that?

Seriously, I shot around 4 hours of video that has me flying over the sand, the ride is like a hover craft.
Never a drop out, or lost seen. I'll wish I had the DVD recorder soon...

Edit Software? Where? I think I got some Sony stuff....

Steve you can download Windows Movie Maker free here.

Movie Maker

It is a good place to start. I like Pinacle Studio8 but I am waiting on delivery of the newest 10.5 version.
Don't know where you live but Fry's Electronics has DVD burners on sale almost every weekend for around 49 bux.

Or if you have Windows XP Service Pack 2, you may already have it on your computer. I just looked and I have it. I never knew it was there. I've been using Pinnacle Studio version 9 now for a while and it is pretty simple to use. However, the whole process of making videos can be very, very time consuming.

Steve you have to upload your video to your PC, Then you can do what ever you want to it, edit, cross fades, add music, special effects, slow motion, all the stuff that real movies have...  Trying to edit on the camera is a step backwards, Cameras are for taking pictures or movies not for editing movies. If you have Windows XP you have a pretty good editing software program already and very easy to understand Windows Movie Maker that is where I learned the basics of editing on a PC...Good Luck  Ill be here waiting to anwser your question's

I think this phrase is referring to editing right in the camera. You really want to load the movie onto your computer and then edit it there (probably much easier). You can edit and cut out scenes, add additional audio tracks, add transitions between scenes, add menus, and many other features, depending on which video editing software you get.

Sony does provide you with the software to import the video into your computer. If you loaded the software provided, it should be under start/picture package/handycam tools/video capturing tool or USB Streaming tool (depending on if you connect the camera to the computer via firewire or USB cable). However, when I used their software to import my first video recording, I couldn't play the video on the computer. It had something to do with the different types of AVI files used. So I used my Pinnacle Studio software to do the import. It worked much better.

Sony does give you some editing software too but I haven't used theirs yet. They also don't provide you with actual DVD burning software though. You'd probably get this when you purchase a DVD burner, or when you buy other video editing tools. However with the software Sony does provide, you should be able to create an MPEG file to post to the web.

Good Luck - hope this makes some sense.

WOW this is probably my longest post yet.

I have found that when following on a ride, The "stock" lens doesn't do justice in the dunes, so I went with the 6mm....

It has other draw backs but at least I can see up ahead 50 feet...

OK, I have burnt DVD's and stored video....

My next step is to up load something maybe I'll do a short, with a bunch of sceens strung together...

Where to Up load, and helpful hints from you experts?

You guys have really helped me!

What is the stock lens that it comes with? What does the 6mm lens do for you? It sounds like I may have too order some additional lenses.

Upload to putfile.com

For info to others..

I just bought a brand new Sony HC42 from B&H Photo for $369.00 Was $450 after adding a larger extra battery and a few tapes.

I have had my 480 lines bullet cam for some time now. I bought the setup with a case to store it all off of ebay for $200.00 from SkullCamz. It has great color and clarity, even recording to my old analog Sony camcorder(which I may be tempted to sell to one of you low-buckers out there).
Once I get some decent footage I will post it up.

I think it was a 3.2 mm...
I put a 6mm on it and shot some vids
To see difference
With the 3.2 you had to be in the roost of the rail in front of you to see it.
With the 6.0 you can be out of the roost in a safe spot to see the rail in front of the rail you are following.
The only issue with the 6.0mm is it gives you weird effects like you are flying, not duning.
I just ordered a 4.6mm so I can play some more.
If the 4.5 is about 1/2 way between the 6 and 3.2 then it should be perfect for me.
Lens $21.00 why not?

I edited a 18 minute video on my "Intervideo WinVideo creator"
I put songs [and edited out lyrics I didn't like] and strung it together...
Not professional by a long way, but, I just couldn't keep my eyes off the screen. It's virtual duning from the computer. I am hooked, I may buy another camera for different angled shots. I may buy a switch to switch from camera to camera while shooting.

I'm telling you, you will not see as many posts from me as you have seen...
Some where a little voice said "Thank gawd for video cameras"
