Tired of my wireless router.

Post by Sloppyduner »

We thought it was our 5 year old router slowing things down, so we got a new one. Its worse!!! Its not so much the speed as the variation of speed. I'd say 10 minutes out of every hour it displays the disconnected icon.

I'm thinking I'd like to run the 100ft span across to the other side of the house. But $80 for 60ft of cable? Does anybody have any they want to sell?

And whats the differance between cat 5 and Cat 6?

THANKS!!!

For the cable, go to Fry's. You can get 250' for $80. I also just used a Belkin wireless router that was $50 from Fry's that worked very well from over 100' away.

The difference between Cat 5 and 6 is the "speed" for which each cable is rated. Cat 5 is more than adequate for internet conections.

I found THIS STUFF Will it work? I put ends on cable years ago. Is there a kit that just sells ends and those crimpers?

Also this new wierless router also supports 5 wired computers. So we were thinking about just using that router. When it comes to getting a pci card for my comuter does it need to be the same brand as this new router? I have an old PCI card with a cat 5 jack. I'll need the drivers for it though huh?

Thanks in advance for any advice. My heads just not all here(more than usual).

Are you sure its your router and not your DSL modem? If you haven't already, connect direct to your modem and see if the problem follows.

When we added on to our house I bought a 500' spool of cat 5 cable and a box of ends to run Ethernet everywhere. Didn't spring for the crimper - just used a tiny flat blade screwdriver to push the contacts in. Must have made at least 10 cables (20 ends) that way and not a single failure.

SD, 300 ft cat 5 would considerd ok between units, so 100 feet...no problem!
Abe's electronic would have cut you a sixer for 1/3 of what you were quoted?
Sad to say....they're gone!
