Upgraded BBS has launched - v3

Post by LoBuck »

Great News Sand Fans.. We have an upgraded BBS coming soon to a computer screen near YOU:!:

Jason (jhitesma) was able to load a Test version of the BBS in to Version 3 of PHPBB and the Moderating Team has been running it through it paces for the last few days. So far so good. =D> Jason is still working out a few kinks and we're testing them as we go.

If all continues to go well, we may be able to launch version 3 LIVE by this Friday night. The transition should take around 2-3 hours and the board will be down during that time. We'll keep you updated as the time comes near.

Here are a few of the improvements:
8) Better Look
8) Ability to post photos as attachments
8) Improve and higher capacity Gallery
8) Gallery integrated to insert photos directly into your posts from your album
8) Insert Videos from Google and You Tube directly into posts

 Report to Moderator function
 Friends and Foes function. Shows when Friends are online. Ignores Foes. (Note that Admins and Mods CAN NOT be ignored so get that out of your mind  )
 Improved Profile functions
 Gallery shortcut to your Photo Gallery at the bottom of each of your posts.

 Improved Moderation Tools
:-$ Real Full Name will be required for all registrations. This function is still under discussion by the Moderating Team. Initially, the real names will only be visible to Administrators and Moderators.

Glenn:

Does this mean we will all have to re-register with new real names and profiles?

Existing accounts and posts will be kept.

One other benefit Glenn didn't mention, our old posts that don't currently show up in searches will start showing up in searches again thanks to a new search index!

Real names will be required immediately on all new accounts when the new version goes live. Users who had real names on their accounts previously (before the last BBS upgrade) will still have their info preserved. Users who have signed up sing the last upgrade and don't have real names on their accounts (because it was too much of a PITA to add them to this version of the BBS) will be given some kind of grace period to allow them to add the information to their profile. If you try to edit your profile and don't fill in the names you will have to fill them in to save your changes.

We're still discussing the finer details of how to get everyone back on the same page with this.

One other benefit of the new board. E-mail addresses will be masked finally so spam bots can't harvest off the BBS. You will still be able to contact other users through e-mail - but your actual e-mail address will be hidden from each other unless you share it in the message. Basically your e-mail will be sent by the BBS to the user instead of you sending it directly.

Won't help those of us who have e-mail addresses that have been out there a long time and are already on tons of spam lists. But it will help those who haven't been harvested stay that way.

There a quite few good features with this latest version. Here are a couple more:

Polls with multiple questions and answers.
We'll have the ability to create sub-forums.

Oh, for the real names, you will still be able to have a screen name that is different from your real name. The real name just needs to be in your profile. Or if you're someone like say, Jerry Seaver, Vincent Brunasso, or Larry Jowdy, you can use your real name as your screen name.

:-k hmm. I always wondered why people addressed Jerry as Mr. AZSandman2 out in public and called him Jerry in here.

You think you have it bad on Spam? Last night I had 288k messages in my spam box. My spam box which is automatically purged of any messages older than 30 days. I cleared them all out and found that they were taking nearly 3Gig of space!

Yeah, I know the pain of spam VERY well.

(Having had the same e-mail address since 1996 which has been on MANY mailing lists, websites, newsgroups and in the address books of people who got viruses there's no forcing the genie back into the bottle for me.)

I posted the good news that we are back up and LIVE with phpBB3 in the Bulletin Board Notices forum.

Jason did an awesome job and I think it only took about 3 hours instead of the projected 4 hours. Under Promise, Over Deliver.

Things may look a bit different that what you're used to. We will be looking around and checking everything out over the weekend. If you guys see anything weird, please post it here in this forum.

I am jazzzzed. \:D/

The red bars will be an option in a few days...for now they're just showing up because I'm working on fixing some graphic links :D

You may notice that the BBS now has a new url. it's now:

http://www.americansandassociation.org/phpBB3/

Instead of:

http://www.americansandassociation.org/phpBB2/

But I put some code on the server to redirect any requests for BB2 over to the new BB3 directory. Unfortunately I forgot that I had linked to some images in the BB2 directory when I created the new theme for BB3.

As a result it was kind of going in circles. Few more images to copy over...I really want to get lightbox working tonight...but I may not be up for that, it's been a long day!

Not always on board band that's all, northing's wrong sometimes older is better, as with anything else all the new cool stuff just takes longer to load that's all. Other that everything looks great and the navigation is very similar, looks good didn't mean to imply there's any problems, I sometimes wish technical advancements wouldn't march on SO fast. Case and point My buddy wants me to build him a new gaming machine, They now have 800 Watt power supplies, video cards with a Gig of DDR video ram, and heat sinks to cool Quad core processors that look adequate to cool an ATV. Other words never mind, I'm just suffering from future shock great job guys, could be it's just a bad day over here...TJ :?

Overall the board should actually be quicker to respond and if anything lighter to load than before...Unless you want to view embedded videos or threads with lots of photos...but those are no worse than they were before.

The total size of the templates is actually a little smaller now with more efficient CSS coding and the few decorative graphics we use re-optimized for smaller/quicker downloads.

Now the first time you load things it will be a little slower as your cache restores. But the caching has also been cleaned up so once your cache is populated things should get even quicker.

Sounds like as good an answer as any, it does appear to be loading much quicker now, it may be getting more traffic as many do want to see what's new. Also that was more of a general comment rather than directed at this BBS, there are others out there that are real resource hogs. I'm just not the computer geek I was at one time, having to have the latest hot gaming hardware, gees 800 Watts if I remember correctly thats over 1 horse power. I just wonder what's on the wish list computer wise with our Eco friends, a greenie once told me I could help by spending more time on my "search engine", as in not burning Fossil fuels well that was when I was running 166 MHz. With the power of these new machines why bother with a racing game, the way things are going the simulations will be just as expensive, and have just as big of a "carbon footprint"...TJ :?

Re: Upgraded BBS Coming Soon

The interesting thing is that new 800watt power supply not only is probably a waste (unless they're running a 20 drive RAID) but at least will save power.

I just swapped out an old 200watt supply in one of my servers for a new 750watt high efficiency supply. For the past 30 days I've had it sitting on a kill-a-watt kWh meter and it's averaged just under a 50w draw most of the time (a few spikes to 100w when I was really working the drives.) Based on a kWh of $.17 (the highest rate APS charges under the worst conditions) that computer costs me about $7 a month to run. It's old 200w supply? Used to draw at least 100w at idle.

Go figure.

As for the ecos:
http://www.blackle.com/about/

Of course you have to not mind the fact that black backgrounds are not very good for the eyes and are much harder for most people to read. (I know it may seem at first that it's easier on your eyes but many studies have shown that over long periods of time light colored backgrounds create much less strain on the eyes.)

I just don't have the energy I once did with this techo stuff, now it's just at least for me keeping what I have running, as far as the overhead of running older stuff at idle that's difficult to calculate. It makes sense just like a flickering fluorescent light could use more power that a working one, problem is I don't think many power bother to measure the power in vs power out of their computers power supply, but it does spur some thought...TJ

Jason,
I know you've been busy and all with this upgrade, but when you get a chance could you please reactivate my original "Voice" account?

The board refuses to acknowledge the username/email address in order to send me a new password.
I sent an email to the board admin address on the login page sometime last week, but I'm guessing you were quite busy.

I haven't got any email to the bbsadmin account.I will check to see if it is working.
